Harold Rovang Carlson “aka” H. Robert Carlson “H.R.,” age 85, passed Feb. 13, 2021 into the loving and protective arms of Jesus C,hrist for eternal rest.  H.R. was born on Nov. 12, 1935, in Marinette, WI, the son of the Rev. Charles and Isabelle (Rovang) Carlson.
In 1946, the family moved to Bryant, SD, where H.R. graduated from Bryant High School. After high school he attended South Dakota State, and during that time he received draft orders for military service.
He entered the Army in January 1957 and served until December of 1958 with half of his military service spent in Germany.  After his military discharge he moved to Minneapolis and during this time he met the love of his life, Mary Jo Gimble from Eitzen, MN. They were married on June 10, 1961 shortly after he earned his college degree.
In the early years in their marriage, he worked in credit and financial management and taught school for several years until he and Mary Jo started their own business. He and Mary Jo owned and operated craft and hobby stores in several locations in Minnesota.  In the late 1970’s they also started a wholesale business, H. R. Carlson Company, distributing to craft stores.   During this time they were blessed with the arrival of three children; Eric, Jane and Jill.
After closing their business in 1997, he was delighted to share his time and love with their children, grandchildren and a host of friends.  He also thoroughly enjoyed traveling, including many trips to Sweden to spend time with his extended family.
He will always be remembered as being a great conversationalist and for his genuine interest in learning about other people’s heritage and knowing every road throughout the Midwest as he loved to drive but most of all he will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and humility. Though we will miss him greatly, we rejoice in his triumphant return to his heavenly father with the blessed promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Charmaine S. Anderson, and is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jo; son, Eric (Stacey) Carlson, Daughters, Jane Carlson and Jill (Eric) Akre and brother in laws Jerry Anderson and Gary Gimble and nieces Dani Marquiss and Mary Langille and nephew Steve Starman; grandchildren Olivia Carlson, Jared Korb, Jana Korb, Sara Korb, Dallas Akre (Jackie), Jordan Thomas (Mark) and Great- Grandchildren Colton and Reagan Akre.
