SIOUX FALLS – After a 5-0 weekend at the Colorado Classic, the South Dakota State University softball team recorded another type of sweep Monday as the Jackrabbits’ Grace Glanzer and Rozelyn Carrillo were honored as Summit League Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively.

Glanzer, a returning freshman from Sioux Falls, pitched 16 consecutive scoreless innings in three appearances (two starts), highlighted by a no-hitter against Oregon State on March 5. She struck out four and walked three in her no-hit effort, which was followed by another seven-inning, four-hit shutout the next day against Colorado State.

In her final appearance of the weekend, Glanzer closed out the Jackabbits 7-1 victory over Colorado State on March 7 with two shutout innings in relief.

Carrillo, a freshman shortstop from Palmdale, California, hit safely in all five games and finished with a .458 batting average (7-for-16) with three home runs, two doubles and nine runs batted in. Highlighting her weekend play was a 3-for-3, five-RBI performance against Northern Colorado on March 7 that included a home run and double.

Carrillo also homered in the March 5 opener against Oregon State and the March 6 victory at Colorado State en route to a 1.125 slugging percentage. She also played errorless defense in 15 total chances.

The Jackrabbits have had the Summit League Pitcher of the Week in each of the two weeks they have played. Freshman Tori Kniesche was honored Feb. 15, after two strong starts the opening weekend of the season.

SDSU, 9-1 overall, is scheduled to play a doubleheader Tuesday at Wichita State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Wilkins Stadium in Wichita, Kansas.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State’s Maya Hansen was named the Summit League’s Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Hansen helped the Jackrabbits to a perfect 2-0 record in its home opening series against Kansas City, thanks to an eight-point showing on the weekend. On Friday, Hansen recorded the 10th hat trick in program history. She became the first to score three or more goals in a game for State since Leah Manuleleua did it in 2018.

Hansen scored the eventual game-winner and game’s first goal in the sixth minute off a corner kick from Hewitt, who sent a ball from the far corner into the middle of the box. The cross found the head of Reagan Anderson, who sent a header assist to Hansen who found the back of the net. Hansen’s second goal came soon after, as the sophomore forward outmaneuvered a defender and the keeper after retrieving a long thru ball from Hewitt and fired it into the open net. In the 85th minute, Hansen fired a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper. She tracked it down and fired again to complete the hat trick.

The sophomore finished off the 2-0 win over the Roos on Sunday as she fought off two Kansas City defenders and the goalkeeper to net her fourth goal of the weekend in the 65th minute.

The Savage, Minnesota native led the Jacks in each of the contests with six and three shots, respectively.

South Dakota State continues its homestand Friday, March 12 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, March 14 at noon as its hosts Denver.

FOOTBALL

ST. LOUIS – South Dakota State quarterback Mark Gronowski was honored Sunday as Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week in helping lead the Jackrabbits to a 35-point victory over Western Illinois a day earlier.

A freshman from Naperville, Illinois, Gronowski accounted for four first-half touchdowns, running for two and passing for two, as eighth-ranked South Dakota State won in its home opener to improve to 2-1 on the season. He opened the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown run, then sandwiched an 80-yard touchdown run around TD passes of 44 and 12 yards to Jadon Janke and Mason Leighton, respectively, in the second quarter.

For the game, Gronowski was 12-of-19 passing for 178 yards and carried four times for 120 yards. He became the first Jackrabbit quarterback to rush for and throw for 100-plus yards in a game since Taryn Christion in a 2017 game against Illinois State.

It is the second conference award of the season for Gronowski, who was named MVFC Newcomer of the Week following SDSU’s season-opening win at Northern Iowa on Feb. 19.

The Jackrabbits return to action Saturday, hosting Youngstown State in a 2 p.m. matchup at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

FOOTBALL

ST. LOUIS – South Dakota State offensive tackle Garret Greenfield was honored Monday as the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week.

A sophomore from Rock Valley, Iowa, Greenfield helped pave the way for a Jackrabbit rushing attack that rolled up 347 rushing yards and four touchdowns, averaging 7.9 yards per carry, in a 45-10 home victory over Western Illinois on March 6. Greenfield graded at 95 percent and did not allow a sack or quarterback pressure as SDSU finished with 531 yards of total offense in the game.

Greenfield joins freshman quarterback Mark Gronowski, who was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday, as award winners for the eighth-ranked Jackrabbits. SDSU, 2-1 overall, hosts Youngstown State at 2 p.m. Saturday.
