BROOKINGS – The Brookings Arts Council will exhibit the works of Jay Fishback in its Main Gallery from Wednesday through Oct 19.
Fishback, who grew up in Brookings, is a filmmaker and photographer from Sioux Falls.
Fishback is no stranger to the Brookings Arts Council, where he took many art classes in his youth. When asked where his favorite place to create is, he answered, “behind the viewfinder.”
His show, titled “Nicaragua: Coming Together Through Baseball,” visits the lives of Nicaraguans playing baseball and softball, farming and practicing medicine through a series of photographs. The exhibit will also feature a film on the non-profit organization Helping Kids Round First’s efforts in the country.
The Flandreau-based organization helps improve the lives of Nicaraguans by bringing the game of baseball to rural areas in the country. It provides baseball and softball equipment and instruction to young people there and also helps with sustainable agriculture, women’s empowerment and education, and hospital supplies.
Fishback has captured the heart of what the organization stands for through his documentary photography and filmmaking. He says his favorite part of the exhibit is the people in his images.
The Brookings Arts Council invites the public to an artist’s reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday. Light refreshments will be served, with an artist’s talk to begin around 5 p.m.
There is no admission charge for the exhibit. The Brookings Arts Council is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon-5 p.m. For more information, call 692-4177 or email artscouncil@brookings.net.
