The next Third Thursday at McCrory Gardens, “Developing Small Patches of Strawberries,” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20. The Brookings Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 22, in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue, between the Brookings Public Library and the Brookings County Courthouse.

The 2019 Brookings Kite Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23, at the Fishback Soccer Park. Saturday hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This free annual event features hand-built show kites of all shapes and sizes and the opportunity for you to fly kites you bring or buy at the festival. The Dakota Royal Charity Draft Horse Show, featuring top six-horse hitches from across the U.S., is coming to the Swiftel Center on Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23. The Brookings Radio Research Club will hold its annual Amateur (Ham) Radio Field Day event on Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, at the Brookings Gun Club located 2 miles east of Interstate 29 on Highway 14 on the north side of the road. This event is open to the public, and all are invited to attend any time from 1 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday. There will be a ham radio licensing test session at 3 p.m. Saturday at the event. This is for a new license or upgrading a present license. There is a $15 FCC fee for electronic processing and submital to the FCC. The White Area Historical Society will present a documentary film on the life of George Daniels at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at the McKnight Event Center in White.  A $5 ticket price goes to the White Area Historical Society. There will be a Q&A following the film by the NorthStar Research group, which produced the film. Daniels was born into slavery in Georgia, escaped from the Confederate army, and enlisted in the Union army. He later moved to Minnesota and then to White to homestead.

Brookings Area Community Band’s next concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at the Pioneer Park Bandshell. “The Big Top Comes to Brookings” – Children’s night at the community band captures the wonder and magic of a traveling circus. In case of rain, concerts start at 7:45 p.m. and are moved indoors to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 10:15-11:15 p.m. Monday, June 24, at the Volga Community Center, 109 Samara Ave. Food distributions provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes.

The Brookings County Community and Family Extension Leaders (Extension Homemakers) will hold a spring kickoff starting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, a Perkins. The group will plan lessons for the coming fall and winter. Interested persons are welcome to attend.

The South Dakota Art Museum will host its next Lunch & Learn featuring Paul Goble and S.D. Nelson exhibits, from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, June 25 at 1036 Medary Ave. Explore current exhibits of Native American story illustrations by Paul Goble and S.D. Nelson with South Dakota Art Museum curators Jodi Lundgren and Taylor McKeown. An interactive gallery discussion will be held from 12:15 - 12:45 p.m. with time on either end to eat or explore. The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum continues its Summertime Food Trucks & Fun series from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at 977 11th St., Brookings. The South Dakota Department of Transportation, City of Volga and City of Brookings will hold informal, open house style public meetings to discuss and receive public input on the upcoming US14-US14 Bypass Corridor Study. The goal is to develop a long-range plan for the US14 corridor, between the US81 intersection south of Arlington and the US14/US14B intersection west of Brookings, and the US14 Bypass, between the US14 intersections east and west of Brookings. The first meeting is set for 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the Valley Fibercom conference room, 209 Kasan Ave., Volga.
