Bring your device and stop in for Drop-in Tech Help from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, in the Brookings Public Library’s Technology Services office, located near the newspapers. Patrons will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.

Thursday, Jan. 23

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The next Adult Craft Class at the Brookings Public Library starts at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23. Participants will learn Zentangle 101. Registration is required for the free event; stop at the library or call 692-9407.

A NAMI holiday party starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Brookings Activity Center. Bring a dish to pass for the potluck, which will include barbecues. A white elephant gift exchange, $10 or under, is also planned for those interested.

The Brookings Arts Council will host a Decorative Stones class from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at 524 Fourth St. Come learn a variety of techniques to decorate stones. The Brookings Interfaith Dialogue will next gather at 6:30 p.m. Thursday Jan. 23, at the Brookings Public Library (Cooper Room). A potluck meal at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by the topic: “Getting to Know you … Building Friendships and Appreciation Across Faith Traditions.” Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for a group donation to a local food pantry or Feeding South Dakota.

South Dakota State University juniors Megan LeMaster and Jamie Derickson will perform a joint recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, in Founders Recital Hall in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center. The recital opens the Never Dark Thursday series for the spring 2020 semester. The program features voice and piano and will be accompanied by Deb Kalsbeck. The Brookings Public Library will host “The 2010s” Trivia Night starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24. Gather your friends and put your mind to the test. Ages 16 and up are invited, and popcorn is provided. Contact the library or RSVP on the library’s Facebook event to register your team of four or fewer.

Saturday, Jan. 25

The sixth annual Prairie Striders Indoor 5K will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Sanford/Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on the SDSU campus. All levels of runners are welcome as the race will have two heats – 8:30 a.m. for those planning to run in 24 minutes or less and the other at 9 a.m. In addition, this year a noncompetitive walk has been added at 7:30 a.m. Participants may walk as many laps as they desire until 8:15 a.m. Cost for the walk is just $15. Packet pickup is immediately preceding the race. Doors open at 7 a.m. Enter online at www.allsportcentral.com. Entry fee is $20 through Jan. 23. Late entry is $25. Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. A bake sale fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis will also be held during the breakfast.

Oakwood Lakes State Park’s annual Cool Kids Classic Fishing Derby is set for Saturday, Jan. 25. The event is open to all kids younger than 14, with registration starting at 11 a.m. at the park’s welcome center. Ice fishing runs from noon-1:30 p.m. with weigh-in and prizes to follow. Bait will be provided, and fishing poles are available to those who need one.

Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program will host Monday Morning Mentoring Meet-Ups at the downtown Kool Beans Coffee. Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, in the parking lot of the Elkton Community Center. Food distributions on a first-come, first-served basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.
