The Tri-Company Dart Tournament is set for Friday through Sunday, Jan. 17-19, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. The event, starting at 9 a.m. Friday, features single, double and team dart tournaments, and advance registration is required. The Altrusa Literacy Luncheon Fundraiser will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church social hall. Speakers are Dr. Rick Holm and the Rev. The Brookings Arts Council will host a Colored Pencil on Fabric class from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at 524 Fourth St. Learn an exciting method of fabric design using colored pencils. Bring your own canvas or muslin fabric, or a canvas tote will be provided. Choose your own photos to work from, or design your own images. Cost is $37. Saturday, Jan. 18

The Brookings Arts Council will host both youth and adult ukulele and guitar lessons on Saturdays from Jan. 18, for 12 weeks. Cost is $210 per series for each instrument, per person. Adult ukulele is from 12:30-1:30 p.m., and adult guitar is from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Youth ukulele is from 2:30-3:30 p.m., with youth guitar from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Come learn how to play in a relaxed group environment. The Brookings Dance Club invites all dancers ages 21 and older to its Snowflakes Dance, held from 8 p.m.-midnight Saturday, Jan. 18, at McKnight Community Hall in White. Music will be provided by Hickory Wind. Admission is $10 per person.

Sunday, Jan. 19

The VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at the post home, 520 Main Ave. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The Works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children, ages 3 to 7 eat for $4, and 2 and younger are free. Monday, Jan. 20

Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program will host Monday Morning Mentoring Meet-Ups at the downtown Kool Beans Coffee. The Brookings Public Library will host an author talk with Dr. Axton Betz-Hamilton at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21. She will discuss her new book, “The Less People Know About Us: A Mystery of Betrayal, Family Secrets, and Stolen Identity.” The event is free and open to the public.

Wednesday, Jan. 22

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at United Methodist Church in Arlington.

Food distributions on a first-come, first-served basis provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes. A photo ID is required.

The Brookings Interfaith Dialogue will next gather at 6:30 p m. Thursday Jan. 23, at the Brookings Public Library (Cooper Room). A potluck meal at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by the topic: “Getting to Know you … Building Friendships and Appreciation Across Faith Traditions.” Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for a group donation to a local food pantry or Feeding South Dakota.
