Brookings American Legion Post No. 74 will hold a pancake, sausage and eggs breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the post home, 1229 Western Ave. Proceeds will be used to support the Boys State, Youth Trooper Academy, and American Legion Baseball programs. The American Legion Auxiliary will also hold a bake sale during the breakfast.

The Dakota Territory Gun Collectors Brookings Gun Show is set for Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Saturday hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and admission is $5.

Brookings Park and Recreation will host a Winter Survival Class from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Larson Nature Center in Dakota Nature Park. Cost is $10 for participants ages 8-12 years old. The class is limited to 14 participants. Come learn the basics of survival if you get lost outside during the winter: building a shelter, starting a fire, first aid and more. Come dressed for the weather as the group will put its new skills to the test outside.

The Fiddlers of South Dakota will host an acoustic music jam form 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Brookings Activity Center, 320 Fifth Ave. Visitors are welcome to come sing and play music, listen, dance or just socialize.

The 27th annual Lamb Bonanza will be held Saturday, Jan.12, in Frost Arena on the SDSU campus. Before tipoff, from 1-2 p.m., members of the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association will serve leg of lamb sandwiches and lamb meatballs on the north side of the track. This year the Jackrabbit women and men host a double header with Oral Roberts. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. for the women and 4:15 p.m. for the men. During the men’s halftime, six lamb pelts will be auctioned.

Sunday, Jan. 13

The Dakota Territory Gun Collectors Brookings Gun Show continues from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Admission is $5.

Monday, Jan. 14

The Winter 2018 Live Music Series at the Pheasant Restaurant and Lounge continues from about 6:30-9:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, with sizzling horn-led jazz from Dakota Jazz Collective. Check www.pheasantrestaurant.com/events for up-to-date information on added performances and chang-es. No cover.

Tuesday, Jan. 15

Better Choices, Better Health Chronic Disease workshop will be held Tuesdays, through Feb. 12, at the SDSU Wellness Center, 1401 N. Campus Dr. The sessions will take place from 9:30 a.m.-noon. Workshop topics include: managing pain, fatigue and stress; tips for healthy eating, personal exercise plans; relaxation techniques; medication how-tos; dealing with emotions; and working better with your doctor and care team. First United Methodist Church will offer Financial Peace University starting on Tuesday, Jan. 15. Area residents are invited to the first class from 6-7:30 p.m. in the church’s youth room at 625 Fifth St. Participants can decide from there if they would like to continue with the class. Wednesday, Jan. 16

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Staff from the office of U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds will visit Brookings from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, to assist residents with any issues they may have dealing with federal agencies. Thursday, Jan. 17

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

The next Adult Craft Class at the Brookings Public Library is set for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in the upstairs Cooper Room. This week, participants will make wire and nail polish flowers. The class is free and open to all, but registration is required to make sure enough supplies are available. Stop by the library or call 692-9407 to register.

The Elkton Community Club’s annual banquet is set for Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Elkton Community Center. The event starts with happy hour at 5:30 p.m., the meal at 6:30 p.m., and entertainment from stand-up comedian Scott Novotny at 7:30 p.m. All are invited to attend, and tickets ($12.50 apiece) are available at Elkton BankStar and CHS. The Brookings Interfaith Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 726 Sixth St. The topic for discussion will be Peace:  According to your faith tradition (world religion), what is peace and how is it to be achieved? What personal and social dimensions of peace are recognized? How do you find peace? The meeting will begin with a potluck. Please bring a passing dish, if able, and remember that many in our interfaith community do not eat pork or may be vegetarian.
