170 new COVID-19 cases, one new death reported in South Dakota Wednesday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 170 new COVID-19 cases and one new death in South Dakota Wednesday.

Eight of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 4,171 total cases (three new confirmed and five new probable): 4,008 of those people have recovered (10 new), with 126 active cases (down by two) and 37 deaths (no change). A total of 13,430 people have tested negative in Brookings County (23 new), and 149 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There are three COVID-19 occupied hospital beds at the Brookings Hospital, the SDDOH website reported Wednesday.

The county is in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 122,398 (170 new – 128 confirmed plus 42 probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 1,789 are classified as active (up by 24 from Tuesday). As of Wednesday, 118,647 people have recovered (145 new), 7,337 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (nine new), 103 people are currently hospitalized (no change) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,962 people have died (one new).

The SDDOH website reports 342,224 people (630 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new death was a woman in her 60s from Minnehaha County.

Increases in positive cases Wednesday include, but are not limited to, 19 in Brown County, 12 in Codington, eight in Lincoln, 44 in Minnehaha and 20 in Pennington.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 576,601 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 326,272 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

Doses administered by Indian Health Services, Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Department of Defense and Bureau of Prisons are not included in the state’s vaccine count.

In Brookings County, 21,030 vaccine doses have been administered to 13,219 people, the SDDOH website reports. As of Wednesday, 37.7% of the total county population has received at least one vaccine dose, and 46.7% of those 16 years and older in Brookings County have received at least one vaccine dose.

More than 54% of the state population age 16 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, according to the SDDOH website, and more than 44% of the state population has completed its vaccination series.
