Dukes shut out Bullets twice

RENNER – The Renner 16U Dukes swept the Bullets in a youth baseball doubleheader Tuesday evening, winning 8-0 and 11-0 (five innings).

Brookings (7-16) has more than a week off before playing host to a tournament Friday, July 7-Sunday, July 9.

Game 1

• Renner 8, Brookings 0

Jonah Wuebben pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Dukes. He struck out four batters and walked two.

The Dukes pulled away from a 1-0 advantage with five runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

John Kunkel finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs.

Chase Merrill was 3-for-3 and Cody Rokusek ended up 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Alex Kowalczyk, Mason Runia and Wuebben each contributed an RBI. Broc Schaefbauer doubled.

The Bullets’ Kane Kurtenbach singled. Cayden Jacobsma and Caden Wright each drew a base on balls.

Jacobsma gave up six runs – five earned – on 10 hits and a walk with three strikeouts in four innings.

Game 2

• Renner 11, Brookings (5 inn.)

Quinton Porter tossed a four-hit shutout with four strikeouts and a pair of walks to help the Dukes complete the sweep.

Renner scored six runs in the second inning, four in the third and one in the fourth.

Kunkel led the offense with a pair of hits and an RBI.

Schaefbauer, who went 1-for-1 with three walks, and Porter both drove in a pair of runs. Runia, Preston Heitkamp and Jonah Picasso each added an RBI. Jackson Meyer scored three times.

Jacobsma finished 2-for-3 for the Bullets. Carter Merritt and Kolby Weinberg both singled, while Kurtenbach and Wright both walked.

Kurtenbach was the losing pitcher after surrendering 10 runs – three earned – on five hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings.
