BRUCE – A Brookings driver suffered unknown injuries after he swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and ended up in a body of water Monday night, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident was reported at 7:46 p.m. Monday on 204th Street near 460th Avenue, south of Oakwood Lakes State Park.

Damon Becker, 21, of Brookings, was traveling east on 204th Street near 460th Avenue in a 2014 Ford F150 when an unknown westbound vehicle that he believed to be a Chevy Avalanche came into his lane of traffic, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.

“(Becker) swerved to avoid a collision and entered the south ditch and into a body of water. Damon was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries,” Sebring said. “The vehicle that came into his lane of traffic never stopped and is unknown at this time.”

Damage to the pickup is estimated at $4,000.

The accident remains under investigation with the sheriff’s office. Also responding to the scene was the Bruce Fire Department.
