Doris Mae Herrig, 94, of Brookings, died, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, at the Brookings hospital. 

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home, with a liturgical wake service beginning at 6:30 p.m. 

 Doris Mae Herrig was born on Sept. 12, 1922, in Armour, the daughter of Elmer and Ruth (Taylor) McDonald. Doris received her education in Armour and was a graduate of Armour High School in 1940. In 1943, she entered the United States Army and served as a WAC until her discharge in 1947. She married Walter A. Herrig on Sept. 12, 1946, in Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., after a brief 12-day courtship. 

She and Walter will celebrate their 71st anniversary together this year in heaven. 

The couple and their family moved throughout the United States and Germany, before settling in Brookings in 1957, where they raised their six children. 

 She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, the VFW Auxiliary and the election board for 20 years. She enjoyed bowling, flower gardening, playing cards and especially spending time with family and friends. She loved all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, taking every opportunity she had to spoil them. 

 Doris is survived by her four sons, James Herrig (Nancy) of Cleveland, Tenn., Richard Herrig (Dee), Michael Herrig (Roberta Geisen), Karl Herrig all of Brookings; two daughters, Ruth Lavelle (Brian) of Spring Grove, Minn., and Jeanne (Bob) Melmer  of Brookings; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and a sister, Darline Thompson of Armour.

 She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter and one brother, Dolan.
