Don’t stop progress, build the overpass, recreation center

Recently in a letter to the editor in the Register was an expression of non-support for a much-needed overpass – on and off ramps at the intersection of I-29 and 20th Street South here in Brookings.

To have this done as soon as possible will add greatly to the current and public welfare of our community.

The forward thinking and work of our city and county officials and many individuals endorse the need for this construction.

Granted, there will be sacrifices for a few for the benefit of the “greater good,” even if eminent domain has to come into effect.

This is not only for citizen use. Imagine the reality use of this exchange for commercial transportation to get products and services to and from our town.

The commercial development along 22nd Avenue and on the east side of Interstate 29 would be a consequence, as well as construction of homes and public housing as Brookings becomes the third largest city in South Dakota.

Don’t forget the positive effect to the congestion at the Sixth Street and I-29 exchange and at the Sixth Street and 22nd Avenue intersection. This will also reduce the wear and tear on 22nd Avenue as the public enters and exits Brookings.

With all this said, for the public welfare for many, many years beyond my time, keep in mind we need a public recreation center with many amenities.
