Deubrook Area girls, Colman-Egan boys claim Dakota Valley Conference Basketball Tournament crowns

ELKTON – Deubrook Area cruised past the host Lady Elks to claim the girls’ title in the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament held in Elkton on Saturday while Colman-Egan rallied past Arlington to cap-ture the boys’ championship.

GIRLS

Championship

• Deubrook Area 73, Elkton-Lake Benton 43

The Dolphins put up 31 points in the first quarter to the Lady Elks’ five to cruise to the DVC title.

Deubrook Area pushed its lead to 44-17 at halftime and led 60-34 through three to improve to 11-2 on the season as ELB fell to 6-5.

Cortney Bauman dropped 20 points to surpass 1,000 for her career as she added six rebounds and three steals. Cassie Quail chipped in with 12 points and four takeaways while Ashley Vandermeer contributed 11 points and four steals. Shaylee DeBeer finished with 10 points and seven boards.

Callie Otkin knocked down four 3-pointers on the way to a team-high 16 points for the Lady Elks. Samantha Schindler had six points and six rebounds as Hannah Krog tacked on five points and a pair of steals.

On Tuesday, ELB plays host to Deuel while the Dolphins head to Castlewood.

Third Place

• Lake Preston 59, Arlington 33

The Divers led 18-11 after one; 35-13 at halftime; and 54-23 through three as they improved to 7-5 with the third-place finish.

Lexie Larsen and Ashlyn DeKnikker both posted a double-double as Larsen finished with 18 points and 11 boards to lead Lake Preston and DeKnikker chipped in with 14 points and 12 boards, to go along with five assists and a pair of steals. Lindsey Hillestad finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Makayla Nelson led the Cardinals with 10 points and six rebounds while Madysn Gilbertson also had 10 points and Marissa Baker contributed five.

On Tuesday, Lake Preston, 7-5, plays host to Florence/Henry and then travels to Arlington on Friday for a rematch with the Cardinals.

Fifth Place

• Dell Rapids St. Mary 47, Colman-Egan 43, OT

After leading 11-9 after a quarter and 21-20 at halftime, it looked as if the Cardinals were going to cruise to the win when they went up 36-29 through three quarters. But Colman-Egan rallied with an 11-4 fourth-quarter run to force overtime, where DRSM outscored the Hawks, 7-3, in the extra 4 minutes.

Sydney Cook led the Cardinals with 17 points – which included a 9-of-13 performance from the free-throw line – to go alone with nine rebounds, while Ella Heinitz added 13 points, three assists and four steals. Maddie Schwebach finished with eight points and eight boards as DRSM improved to 5-7.

Haleigh Nicol’s 15 points were tops for Colman-Egan, which dropped to 4-10. Braiden Westley chipped in with nine points as Mackenzie Hemmer finished with seven points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.

The Cardinals play host to Baltic tonight while the Hawks take on Deubrook Area on Friday in Col-man.

Seventh Place

Estelline defeated Oldham-Ramona/Rutland for seventh place.

BOYS

Championship

• Colman-Egan 60, Arlington 55

The Hawks built a 17-point lead in the first half, but had to rally to overcome an Arlington second-half rally to win the DVC title.

Colman-Egan led 22-11 after 8 minutes and 35-22 at halftime before the Cardinals started their comeback. Arlington outscored the Hawks 17-6 in the third quarter and then went up by three points early in the fourth following a technical foul charged to the Colman-Egan bench. But CE used a 14-8 free-throw advantage and regained control down the stretch for the five-point win.

Kade Groos scored 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Hawks, who improved to 7-4 on the season. Keith Crisp contributed 12 points before fouling out as Bodee Groos chipped in with 10 points, four assists and three steals. Dalton Voelker ended up with eight points and five boards, to go along with a pair of takeaways and two dimes.

Will Parry tallied a game-high 25 points for Arlington, which dropped to 7-4. Scott Sampson added eight points and three assists as Trey Ramstad finished with six points and seven rebounds.

On Thursday, Colman-Egan plays host to Deubrook while the Cardinals welcome Lake Preston to Arlington.

Third Place

• Dell Rapids St. Mary 64, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 44

The Cardinals trailed 15-14 after a quarter, but held the Raiders to six points in the second frame to build a 28-21 lead at halftime. DRSM increased its lead to 43-33 through three en route to the 20-point victory.

Hunter Breske led ORR, which dropped to 5-6, with 13 points while Jamus Brown chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.

The Raiders play host to De Smet on Thursday in Ramona while DRSM travels to Canistota on Friday.

Fifth Place

• Deubrook Area 59, Lake Preston 54, OT

The Dolphins led early – 16-7 after 8 minutes; 25-18 at halftime; and 40-31 through three – before the Divers overcame the nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 48-48 and force overtime.

Cody Bauman scored 18 points, dished out six assists and came up with two steals for Deubrook, which improved to 6-5 on the season. Brock Sheffield chipped in with 15 points and nine rebounds while Jack Bandemer had 12 points.

Carter Malone’s 16 points led Lake Preston, which dropped to 3-9. Paydon Casper finished with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists as Jasper Denison added 10 points and seven boards. Byron Bumann ended up with eight points, seven assists and four steals.

On Tuesday, the Divers play host to Florence/Henry while the Dolphins travel to Colman on Thurs-day to take on the Hawks.

Seventh Place

• Elkton-Lake Benton 67, Estelline 33

Leading 22-21 at halftime, the Elks held the Redmen to single digits in each quarter of the second half to pull away to the 34-point win.

Matthew Nibbe led three ELB players in double-digit scoring with 19 points, to go along with seven rebounds as the Elks improved to 3-8. Grant DeRuyter contributed 10 points and a game-high eight boards while Devin Sopko finished with 10 markers and three steals.

Riley Benning’s 11 points led Estelline, which dropped to 0-12 on the season. Davon Dahl had 10 points, five rebounds and two steals as Marcis Hausman chipped in with seven rebounds and five assists.

The Redmen travel to Iroquois tonight while the Elks play host to Deuel on Tuesday.
