Dems hosting picnic

BROOKINGS – Sen. Billie Sutton and Tim Bjorkman will be guests at the Brookings County Democrats’ annual picnic at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Community Life Center, corner of Sixth Street and Seventh Avenue in Brookings.

Sutton is running for South Dakota governor and Bjorkman for U.S. House of Representatives.

Sutton, a fifth-generation rancher from Burke, is the minority leader of the South Dakota Senate. During his tenure he has fought for smarter economic development and against “top down” corporate welfare that only benefits those who need it the least. He has worked for better schools with more funding for kindergarten through college learning.

As governor, Sutton says he will fight to ensure that all South Dakotans can live the dream of having a good-paying job, a great quality of life, and a world-class education.

Bjorkman is a retired judge from Canistota. He believes “the issues we face are not insurmountable. We just need common sense people who are willing to work across the aisle to get the job done. My entire career as a judge was devoted to seeking fair answers to problems in a nonpartisan manner, and that is how I will legislate as your congressman.“

As a Congressman, Bjorkman says he will fight for South Dakota in “Washington’s war on rural America." This includes ending corporate welfare, providing a living minimum wage, universal, affordable health care, and tax reform that won’t give lower taxes to the rich.

Picnickers are asked to bring a dish to pass. Tableware and beverages will be provided. Donations to the food pantry and a free will donation to the party are welcome.

The picnic is free and open to the public.
