Delores VanDerostyne - Canby, Minnesota

Dolores VanDerostyne, age 88, of Canby, Minnesota passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby, MN. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby, MN. Burial will be at the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Canby, MN. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at the Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby. Visitation will resume on Wednesday morning from 11:30 – 12:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home with a procession to the church. The Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel of Canby is entrusted with the arrangements. 

Dolores Shirley VanDerostyne was born on the family farm in Hendricks, MN to parents Roman and Anna (Sommervold) Sik. She was the third born out of nine children to the Sik family. Dolores attended country school near Hendricks. After school she helped her mother with household chores. 

On May 3, 1950 Dolores was united in marriage to Edward VanDerostyne at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wino, MN and to this union they were blessed with four sons: Edward Jr., Randy, Jeff and Dean. She worked at the turkey plant in Marshall in the 1960’s, in the early 70’s she worked at the Canby liquor store as a waitress and in the mid 70’s worked at the Canby News.

She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church where she was a member of the CCW. She enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren, watching the Hallmark Channel on TV and playing cards with relatives. Dolores also enjoyed going to wedding dances, dancing with Ed and going to county fairs. Time spent with family was highly valued by her especially time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed baking breads and buns and making donuts and bars. 

Dolores is survived by her children: Edward Jr. VanDerostyne, Canby, MN, Randy (Linda) VanDerostyne, Canby, MN, Dean (Andrea) VanDerostyne, Canby, MN and Jeff VanDerostyne, Huron, SD; 8 grandchildren: Farah Johnson, Shane VanDerostyne, Shawn VanDerostyne, Melissa VanDerostyne, Amanda Werner , Adam VanDerostyne, Daniel VanDerostyne and Deanna VanDerostyne; 10 great-grandchildren: Marlee, Kienzle and Skylee Sawyer, Vyolette, Alexis and Rylee Werner, Kiley, Aaden and Aavery VanDerostyne and Kyson DeSmet; and sister, Diane (Gary) Prescott, Redwood Falls, MN.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward; parents, Roman and Anna; siblings: Alvin, Stanley, Irwin, Gerald, Duane, Gene, Phyllis and infant brother and sister; two sons and one daughter in infancy; and one granddaughter, Tonja VanDerostyne.
