BROOKINGS – The Cubs opened the season with a 14-4, eight-inning defeat of Pipestone on Saturday night at Bob Shelden Field.
Mason Winterboer’s two-out RBI double in the sixth put Brookings ahead 5-4. The home team pulled away with four runs in the seventh and then ended it with a five-spot in the eighth.
The Cubs were up 4-0 after two innings. The A’s pulled even in the fifth.
Sam McMacken doubled twice, drove in four runs and scored three times.
Ty Schneider was 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
Justin Devine also had two doubles and drove in a pair. Jake Anderson and Jeff Fish both tripled and drove in a run.
Starter Kyle Krogman allowed four runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and a walk in five innings.
Andrew Polly tossed two hitless innings in the relief to earn the win. He struck out two and walked two. Tyler Kreutner worked the eighth.
Collin Moeller accounted for three of Pipestone’s 10 singles, adding two RBIs.
Brookings plays at Volga on Wednesday, May 12, at 7 p.m.
