Cubs topple Cormorants 18-5 in 8

VOLGA – Jared Tschetter racked up eight RBIs as the Cubs scored 15 unanswered runs to turn a two-run deficit into an 18-5, eight-inning victory over the Cormorants during amateur baseball action Thursday night at The Nest at Hoff Field.

Cubs topple Cormorants 18-5 in 8

VOLGA – Jared Tschetter racked up eight RBIs as the Cubs scored 15 unanswered runs to turn a two-run deficit into an 18-5, eight-inning victory over the Cormorants during amateur baseball action Thursday night at The Nest at Hoff Field.

The No. 6 hitter, who was hitless through his first two at-bats, finished 4-for-6 with a home run and a pair of doubles.

Seven of the nine Cubs starters totaled at least two hits as Brookings racked up 18 hits and drew 12 free passes, including eight walks.

Kenneth Melendez also homered. Jeff Fish doubled twice.

JaColby Anderson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Sam McMacken contributed a pair of hits as he and Fish both scored three times.

Kyle Krogman, who drove in a pair of runs, and Austin Koenig both doubled and singled. Andy Lee chipped in with a 2-for-5 performance.

Anderson opened the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first. McMacken reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch in the second.

Melendez led off the fourth with a homer to push the margin to 3-0.

Volga totaled 10 hits, including two apiece from Austin Chase, Andrew Grack and Jordan Nelson. The Cormorants put up all five of their runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Randy Santema singled before Tanner Thompson-Moad and Brady Will drew back-to-back walks to load the bases.

Chase, Brady Bury and Grack notched consecutive run-scoring hits to pull Volga even at 3-all.

Layne Lucas’ fielder’s choice drove in Will. Nelson tacked on a two-out RBI single to give the home team a 5-3 lead.

It was all Brookings after that.

McMacken singled and later scored on an error in the fifth. Tschetter came through with an RBI double and then scored on a wild pitch to put the Cubs on top 6-5.

In the sixth, McMacken drove in a run with a single and Koenig did the same with a double. Tschetter’s two-run two-bagger made it 10-5.

Krogman stepped up with a run-scoring single in the seventh. Tschetter’s two-run single with two outs gave Brookings a 13-5 cushion.

In the eighth, Krogman had an RBI double and Anderson added an RBI single.

Tschetter capped his big night with a three-run blast to provide for the final margin.

The game ended after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.

JaColby Anderson picked up the win in relief of Curt Anderson, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Jeff Fish struck out the side in the eighth.

Curt Anderson surrendered four runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts over the first three innings.

Lucas, Volga’s starter, gave up 10 runs – nine earned – on nine hits and six walks with a pair of punchouts.

On Sunday, Volga plays host to the Castlewood Monarchs at 4 p.m. and Brookings (4-0) heads to Flandreau for a 5 p.m. matchup.
