Cubs blow out Aces, 12-0, in season opener

AURORA – For the first time in almost three months, there was a live sporting event in the Brookings area Wednesday night.

The Brookings Cubs beat the Aurora Aces 12-0 in seven innings in their season opener at Langland Field in Aurora. The season had been pushed back due to the coronavirus.

The Cubs had 12 total hits during the game. Jake Anderson led the way for Brookings going 2-for-4 with two RBI’s.

JaColby Anderson went 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBI’s. Todd Standish went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Jared Tschetter went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI’s.

Brookings got on the board early in the first inning when Tschetter hit a two RBI double to make it 2-0. Jake Devine then struck out to end that half of the inning.

The Aces got the first two batters of the bottom of the inning on via hit by pitch and an error. They would not take advantage though as they went down one-two-three after that.

The Cubs broke the game open in the top of the second. Standish hit a one out RBI double and Anderson followed with a two-run home run to make 5-0 heading into the bottom of the second. 

Brookings added a run in the third on an errror and then scored two more runs in the fifth. The Cubs put the game out of reach in the sixth when they scored four runs. Anderson and Devine hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 10-0. Jacob Schoon then hit back-to-back two out RBI singles to make 12-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

The Cubs shutdown the Aces one-two-three in the sixth and the seventh and the Cubs came away with a 10-run rule victory in the season opener.

Anderson started the game and pitched two innings giving up one hit and struck out two batters. Joey Texley picked up the win after pitching two innings giving up three hits and striking out five batters. Schoon pitched one innning and gave up no hits and struck out two batters. Devine pitched two innings and gave up no hits and struck out five batters.

The Cubs will play the Milroy, Minnesota, Yankees and the Dawson, Minnesota, Drakes on Sunday in Aurora.
