Cossacks win Pentagon Invitational; Lady Elks second in home tourney

SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Valley volleyball team won the Sanford Pentagon Invitational Tournament Orange Division on Saturday.

The Cossacks beat Bridgewater-Emery 25-11, 25-13 and Avon 25-7, 25-15 in pool play. They topped Colman-Egan 25-16, 19-25, 25-10 in the semifinals.

Sioux Valley capped its 4-0 performance beating Hanson by the set scores of 20-25, 25-18 and 25-14 in the title match.

The Hawks went 1-1 in pool play, defeating Hitchcock-Tulare 25-18, 25-12 but falling 25-17, 18-25, 25-20 to the Beaverettes.

Colman-Egan toppled Aberdeen Roncalli 25-13, 9-25, 25-19 in the quarterfinals, before falling to Sioux Valley in the semis.

The Hawks closed out the day by beating Bridgewater-Emery 25-23, 23-25, 25-18 in the third-place match.

Western Christian (Iowa) swept Madison 25-9, 25-23 in the Blue Division championship match.

Sioux Valley (16-3) plays host to Flandreau on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Colman-Egan (9-8) plays host to Deubrook Area on Thursday.

ELKTON – Hills Beaver Creek (Minn.) went 5-0, Elkton-Lake Benton 4-1, Alcester-Hudson 3-2, Dell Rapid St. Mary 2-3, Irene-Wakonda 1-4 and Iroquois 0-5 at the Don Magnus Tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Elks (12-6) head to Garretson on Tuesday.

Aubrey Wirth had five kills, Samantha Schindler four and Baylee Jandahl three for the Lady Elks. Abby Landsman totaled nine service aces and nine digs. Callie Otkin added 11 set assists and three aces. Wirth notched a pair of solo blocks.

Hannah Krog and Schindler both recorded eight kills, while Jandahl and Wirth added four apiece. Otkin netted 26 set assists and Landsman notched 15 digs. Karlie Christensen had four aces.

• ELB 2, Alcester-Hudson 0

Krog totaled a team tourney-high 13 kills, Schindler contributed seven, Wirth six and Jandahl five. Otkin had 29 set assists and Landsman tallied 27 digs. Julia Drietz, Christensen and Jesse Busselman chipped in with 11 digs apiece.

Schindler and Krog both recorded seven kills, and Jandahl and Wirth each added four. Otkin had 24 set assists and Landsman came up with 22 digs. Christensen contributed 12 digs.

Schindler had seven kills to pace ELB and Krog contributed six. Landsman came up with 24 digs and Otkin dished out 11 set assists. Christensen totaled three aces and 11 digs. Drietz also tallied 11 digs.
