Cossacks in fourth, Bobcats in 11th after first round of state tourney

The Sioux Valley boys’ golf team sits in fourth and the Brookings boys’ golf team sits in 11th place after the first day of the South Dakota State Golf Championships on Monday.

Class AA

Brookings finished the first day of the tournament at the Lakeview Municipal Golf Course in Mitchell with a team score of +45. The Bobcats were led by Cade Brecher, who shot a 79 to finish +7 on the day and is tied for 23rd place with Watertown’s Jaden Solheim and Ty Lernards, O’Gorman’s Will Hurd, Lincoln Houska of Pierre T.F. Riggs, Will Peterson of Brandon Valley and Jack Hilgenberg of Sioux Falls Lincoln.

Austin Clark also had a great opening round, shooting an 80 to finish +8 on the afternoon. He is tied with Brandon Valley’s Caleb Surprenant, Mitchell’s Jackson Childs, Noah Larson and Jager Juracek and Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Braden Watembach for 30th place.

Egan Jensen and Tyson Lunn are tied for 65th place with an opening round of 87 (+15), Cale Jones is tied for 74th after an opening round of 88 (+16) and Jase Bauer is tied for 83rd with an opening round of 93 (+21).

Harrisburg leads after the first day of the tournament with a team score of -2, with Pierre finishing in second place at +6. O’Gorman (+16), Watertown (+21) and Mitchell (+23) round out the top five.

Harrisburg’s Riley Christensen leads the individual tournament after shooting a 68 (-4). Harrisburg’s Hayden Scott and Pierre’s Nicklaus Bothun are tied for second as they both shot a 70 (-2). Pierre’s Sawyer Sonnenschein and Parker Schultz are tied for fourth (71, -1).

The second day of the tournament is set for Tuesday.

Class A

Sioux Valley finished the first day of the tournament with a team score of +40 at the Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen. Tate Steffensen led the way for the Cossacks with an opening round of 78 (+6) that has him tied for 10th along with Parkston’s Payton Koehn, Canton’s Carson Steffensen, West Central’s Kamden Zomer and Dakota Valley’s Logan Collette.

Kyan Overbo also shined on the first day, shooting an opening-round 79 (+7) that has hi, tied with Tea Area’s Derek Andersen and Vermillion’s Carter Hansen for 17th place.

Other Sioux Valley golfers included Kyler Bezdichek, who is in 29th with an opening round 83 (+11), Jameson Degen, who is tied for 48th with an opening round 88 (+16) and Maverick Nelson, who is tied for 56th with an opening-round 90 (+18).

The Flandreau Fliers were also represented on the first day of the tournament with Kaden Burshiem shooting an opening-round 84 (+12). Burshiem is tied with Aberdeen Roncalli’s Andrew Gerlach, Milbank’s Jonathan Deboer and Caleb Wipf of Lennox for 33rd after Day 1.

Alfie Henderson also took part in the tournament, finishing tied for 45th with an opening round 88 (+16).

Chamberlain’s Dakota Munger, Tea Area’s Keaton Newborg and Vermillion’s Trey Hansen and Cooper Girard are all tied for first place in the individual tournament after shooting a 74 (+2).

Vermillion leads the team portion of the tournament after shooting +16 on the first day. Aberdeen Roncalli is second (+32) and Dakota Valley is in third (+38).

The Cossacks and Fliers will take the course again for the second day of the tournament on Tuesday morning.
