Cossacks crush MCM in BEC battle, 79-55; Madison nips Fliers

VOLGA – Sioux Valley beat McCook Central/Montrose 79-55 in a Big East Conference boys’ basketball game Friday night.

The Cossacks led 27-16 after a quarter, 47-29 at halftime and 64-38 through three. They pushed the margin to 30 early in the final period.

Ryan Schuster had a big night in the win, dropping in 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out six assists.

Max Nielson scored 17 points. Noah Puetz added 11 points and Parker Puetz seven, as both players had six boards.

Sioux Valley shot 47.8 percent (33-of-69) from the field and committed just five turnovers.

The Fighting Cougars finished at 37.5 percent (24-of-64) with 16 giveaways.

Logan Katzer posted a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Collin Kolbeck had 12 points and Koltan Lindstrom 11.

Sioux Valley (8-3, 4-0) heads to Chester Area on Thursday. McCook Central/Montrose (3-7, 1-3) plays at Flandreau on Friday.

FLANDREAU – Madison edged the Fliers 74-73 in a nonconference boys’ basketball game Friday.

Keaton Nighbert led a balanced Bulldog attack with 20 points. Doyle Brown had 15 points and Cody Brown and Caileb Reilly both added 11.

Flandreau’s Tash Lunday scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Connor LeBrun contributed 23 points and three boards.

Nate Kneebone totaled 10 points, seven boards and four assists. Jevan Moran added eight points and five dimes.

Both teams return to action Tuesday, with Flandreau (4-5) traveling to Deuel and Madison (4-3) heading to Sisseton.

 Dell Rapids St. Mary 74, Deubrook Area 68

WHITE – Connor Libis scored 34 points as Dell Rapids St. Mary dropped Deubrook Area 74-68 in a Dakota Valley Conference boys’ basketball game Friday night.

The Cardinals led 14-13 after a quarter and 36-24 at halftime. The Dolphins cut the deficit to 51-48 at the end of three.

Libis hit four 3-pointers and went 8-of-9 on free throws while adding five rebounds.

Max Herber finished with 14 points and three boards.

Deubrook’s Brock Sheffield notched a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Clayton Koppatschek contributed 15 points, Colby Trooien 12 and Karter Kruit 10. Koppatschek grabbed five boards and dished out four assists. Denton Schwartz came down with eight rebounds.

Deubrook Area (4-4, 3-1) faces Hibbing, Minn., in the Heritage Classic today at 12:30 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. Dell Rapids St. Mary (7-1, 5-1) faces Estelline/Hendricks in the first round of the DVC Tournament on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Elkton.
