Cossacks crush Canton 42-14 in opener

VOLGA – Daymein Lucas and Tyge Schiller helped Sioux Valley open the football season with a victory, as the Cossacks beat Canton 42-14 on Friday night.

Lucas rushed 21 times for 155 yards and Schiller added 11 attempts for 117 yards. Both players scored a pair of touchdowns.

Sioux Valley totaled 355 yards on 49 rushing attempts.

The Cossacks forced five turnovers and did not have a giveaway.

Lucas recovered a fumble on the Sioux Valley 15-yard-line on the C-Hawks’ opening possession.

Schiller then capped an 85-yard drive with a 33-yard TD run to open the scoring at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter.

Canton’s Evan Schroedermeier broke out of a pack of Sioux Valley defenders to return the ensuing kickoff 77 yards for a score to knot things up at 7-all.

Lucas had a 64-yard touchdown run called because of a penalty on the Cossacks’ next possession. However, Sioux Valley still found the end zone on the drive as Dalton Hanson ran in from 35 yards out to make it 13-7.

Schiller came through with an interception in the red zone and returned the ball to the Canton 31-yard line. He later burst into the end zone from 6 yards out to push the margin to 20-7 with 8:57 to go in the second.

Sioux Valley’s Brennan Stoltenberg had a fumble recovery at the 7:19 mark of the second quarter.

Lucas ran up the middle for a 24-yard score soon thereafter as the Cossacks moved ahead 27-7.

Another fumble recovery – this time by Chase Ringheimer – set up Sioux Valley at the Canton 25-yard-line.

Lucas then had a TD run and Jaxton Schiller caught a pass from Noah Puetz for the two-point conversion to make it 35-7 with 6:51 left in the third.

Schroedermeier caught a 16-yard touchdown toss from Scott Peterson and Kayden Verley added his second successful PAT kick to pull the C-Hawks within 35-14 at the 5:56 mark of the third.

Sioux Valley closed out the scoring with 3:30 to play in the game on Tate White’s 4-yard run. Stoltenberg kicked the PAT – his fourth make on five attempts – to provide for the final margin.

Tyler Schwartz paced the defense with 13 tackles and Stoltenberg added 12.

Sioux Valley limited Canton to 100 rushing yards on 35 attempts.

The Cossacks finished with a 404-232 advantage in total yards of offense.

Puetz went 2-for-6 for 31 yards, including a 25-yarder to Schwartz.

For Canton, Peterson was 13-of-20 for 132 yards with a TD and an INT. Schroedermeier caught seven passes for 90 yards. Sam Hopper ran for 51 yards and Alex Mastalir added 33.

Joe Beyke made nine tackles and Jarred Smith eight.

Sioux Valley plays at Beresford and Canton is host to Chamberlain next week.

• Colman-Egan 34, Elkton-Lake Benton 6

ELKTON – Bodee Groos ran 14 times for 125 yards and a pair of scores as the defending Class 9A state champion Hawks, who dropped to 9B this season, opened the 2017 campaign with a road victory.

Groos had scoring rushes of 6 yards and 1 yard in the second quarter. Chase Hemmer and Keith Crittenden added the two-point conversion runs.

Kade Groos scored on a 27-yard run with 59.3 seconds showing on the clock to make it 22-0 at halftime.

Bodee Groos found Dalton Voelker for a 13-yard TD toss midway through the third. Trey McKnight pushed the margin to 34-0 with a 1-yard plunge with 2:30 left in the period.

The Elks’ Devin Sopko ran for 47 yards, including a 27-yard scamper to paydirt with 10:00 remaining.

Hemmer had nine tackles and Voelker added seven for Colman-Egan.

ELB’s Taryn Krog made 10 stops, including one sack.

The Elks travel to Ramona to face Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday. Colman-Egan is open next week before returning to action at Dell Rapids St. Mary on Friday, Sept. 1.

• Arlington/Lake Preston 54, Dell Rapids St. Mary 26

LAKE PRESTON – Devon Heuer had a hand in five touchdowns as the Badgers beat the Cardinals.

He went 7-of-9 for 218 yards and three touchdowns through the air, while rushing for 103 yards and two more scores.

Gavin Holland picked up 118 yards on the ground, scoring twice. Byron Bumann racked up 115 yards and a TD on three receptions.

Arlington/Lake Preston led 20-8 after a quarter, 34-8 at halftime and 48-14 through three.

The Cardinals head to Estelline and the Badgers hit the road to face De Smet next week.

• Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 48, Estelline 16

ESTELLINE – Six different Raiders found the end zone in the win.

Jamus Brown had TD tosses of 23 yards to Casey Renaas, 29 yards to Taylor Hojer, 15 yards to Jeremiah Hoekman and 21 yards to Isaac Hegdahl.

Brown added a 2-yard scoring run, while Daniel Jaton had a 6-yarder.

The Redmen’s Marcus Hausman ran for 123 yards and a score. Defensively, he made eight tackles, recovered a fumble and blocked a kick.

Devon Dahl had eight tackles and a pick-six.

ORR plays host to Elkton-Lake Benton and Estelline is host to Dell Rapids St. Mary next week.

• McCook Central/Montrose 43, Flandreau 6

FLANDREAU – Austin Thu ran for 190 yards as the Fighting Cougars totaled 426 yards of offense in the victory.

Matt Wegener added 76 yards, Bryce Smart 58 and Blake Gessner 55.

Flandreau’s Michael Witte finished 5-of-11 for 104 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Witte ran for 33 yards, while Brendan Ten Eyck and Luke Behrens added 21 apiece.

Flandreau had 179 yards of offense.

Witte paced the defense with 15 tackles, Ten Eyck had 13 and Johnny DeLoera 11.

MCM travels to Elk Point-Jefferson on Friday, while Flandreau is open before playing host to the Huskies on Friday, Sept. 1.
