BROOKINGS – A time-honored tradition happened in the most unique and unconventional of ways. This year, 216 Brookings High School seniors graduated in a drive-through ceremony at the school Saturday evening.
Each graduating senior could have one car to hold as many family members as possible, so that there would be enough space for everyone in the school’s west parking lot. They were given “assigned seating,” and from there each family drove up to the stage outside the high school’s main entrance. Each masked graduate got out, climbed to the stage, received their diploma, had their photo taken, and hopped back in the car.
Senior Joyce Wu sang “The Star Spangled Banner,” followed by introductory speakers: Principal Paul von Fischer and Vice Principal Shelly Jensen. Following them, English teachers Steve Binkley and Richard Ganci shared their insights and wisdom on graduating during this tumultuous time.
The stage was set up with two large video displays that projected the speakers so the audience could have a better view. The ceremony was also broadcast on the radio and on the Brookings Bobcat Network on YouTube.
Von Fischer spoke about the graduating Class of 2020 and how it was an event they – especially this year – will never forget.
