Commission appoints OAC board

BROOKINGS – The Brookings County Commission continues to settle into its role as the owner of the Outdoor Adventure Center, now the Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center.

Among its most recent action in regard to the recently acquired facility and its property is appointing members to the BCOAC Advisory Board.

The BCOAC Advisory Board will oversee the operation of the BCOAC and make recommendations to the county commission.

There were five board positions to be allocated during the Tuesday meeting: The pistol range committee member, the archery range committee member, the 4-H Extension Board member, the 4-H shooting sports member and the community at-large member.

Appointed to those posts were Arden Sigl (pistol range), John Ruffolo (archery range), Andy Dupraz (4-H Extension Board), Jerry Nold (4-H shooting sports) and Tim Reed (community at-large).

There were 14 people who submitted applications for these various positions, with one of the 14 submitting two applications for different spots on the board.

“It’s impressive to have this many people apply for these positions. We could be sitting here with nobody or one or two per (position), but it’s a tough decision,” County Commission Chairman Larry Jensen said.

Commissioner Ryan Krogman added, “By no means by picking one over the other do we think somebody else is not qualified. We want those individuals to still stay active as volunteers and with their groups and try to make this a great facility.”

Other positions at the facility have yet to be filled. At the meeting, the county commissioners finalized a pair of requests to fill vacancies; one for the position of BCOAC director and the other for BCOAC membership assistant.

A full-time position, the OAC director is responsible for the direct administration and operation of the OAC. He or she plans, organizes and directs functions as well as marketing and supervisory work associated with all aspects of the operation of the OAC, among other assorted tasks.

The position is supervised by and answerable to the county commission. It also falls under the direction of the advisory board.

The position itself oversees full-time, part-time and volunteer staff at the OAC.

The membership assistant is a part-time job that would mostly be scheduled during evenings and weekends. This job’s responsibilities include responding to member and guest needs, promoting membership and programs as well as recording membership, rental and program payments from members and guests and taking and recording membership applications.
