ST. LOUIS — South Dakota State scored three times in the top of the first inning and starter Jake Goble made that early lead stand up as the Jackrabbit baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over Saint Louis Wednesday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center.

With their first win on their Spring Break trip, the Jackabbits improved to 4-9 overall. Saint Louis dropped to 10-5.

Dawson Parry opened the scoring with a two-run home run off Billiken starter Ben Cherico, bringing home Ryan McDonald ahead of him, and Luke Ira added a run-scoring single later in the frame.

A sophomore right-hander from Rapid City, Goble held SLU in check over six innings, allowing an unearned run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Neuweg. Goble scattered four hits, struck out four and walked two in his longest career outing.

SLU reliever Caleb Thomson matched Goble with six solid innings of his own, keeping the Billikens in the game with six strikeouts and a pair of walks until exiting in the eighth.

The Jackrabbits went on to add insurance runs in both the eighth and ninth innings on RBI singles by Adam Benes and Cade Stuff, respectively.

Eli Sundquist pitched a spotless seventh for the Jackrabbits, but left with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth. SDSU closer Ryan Bourassa recorded the final out of that inning on a groundout, then tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his third save of the season.

SDSU held a 10-5 advantage in hits as Stuff, Parry and Jess Bellows all collected two hits.

The Jackrabbits’ scheduled series against Iowa this weekend has been altered due to expected inclement weather. The two squads are now slated to play a single game at 2 p.m. Friday at Creekside Baseball Park in Parkville, Missouri, before heading to Iowa City for a noon doubleheader Sunday at Duane Banks Field.
