His talk, “Dakota Puckertoes and the Woodland Heritage,” is the 2019 Northern Plains Tribal Arts Show Jurors Forum Lecture. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.

“We are privileged to host this lecture and excited to share an expert of Jacobson’s caliber with students, university and community members,” said South Dakota Art Museum director Lynn Verschoor, who has worked with the Northern Plains Tribal Arts Show for more than a decade.

Jacobson is working to revitalize the “Puckertoe” style of moccasins amongst the Isanti bands of Dakota people in Minnesota. As an artist-in-residence with the Minnesota Historical Society, he is also working toward resurgence of the woodland cultural identity of his people that predates their forced removal from the Minnesota area and onto the Great Plains.

Jacobson is an enrolled member of the Prairie Island Indian Community of southeastern Minnesota and belongs to the Bdewakantunwan band of Dakota. A graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with an emphasis in fine arts studio, he is also a traditional artist, having been trained in beadwork, quillwork and moccasin making.

As a juror for the 2019 Northern Plains Tribal Arts Show, Jacobson is one of three jurors selected from a national pool of American Indian art expects, scholars and respected working artists. The juried art show is held annually in Sioux Falls in conjunction with the Northern Plains Indian Art Market. It draws Native American artists who work in contemporary fine arts and those who create art using traditional materials, methods and styles. To be eligible to enter an artist must be an enrolled member of one of 23 tribes the show recognizes as Northern Plains. Artists from several plains tribes of Canada are also accepted.

Jacobson’s lecture at South Dakota Art Museum kicks off this important national showcase for American Indian art of the northern plains. The Best in Show awards reception will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Old Courthouse Museum in Sioux Falls. The art market is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 21 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Sioux Falls Hilton Garden Hotel.
