'Chutes drop two games in Watertown

WATERTOWN – The ‘Chutes lost a pair of close games in Watertown Wednesday. With the two losses they fell to under .500 for the season at 8-9.

Game 1

• Watertown 3, Brookings 2

Brookings took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Max Kjelden reached on error with one out. Jake Ammann then hit an RBI single to that scored Kjelden.

Both teams were scoreless until the fourth inning when each team scored a run. Brookings took Trey Svenness and W Koenig each reached on an error. Svenness then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. 

Zach Hirsch led off the bottom of the inning for Watertown with a single. He would later score on a Kade Russell RBI single to make 2-1 heading into the fifth inning. 

Brookings was held scoreless in the fifth inning. Kjelden reached on a single, but Jamison Honkomp flew out to right and Amman popped out to the pitcher.

Mason Lloyd hit a single to begin the bottom of the inning for Watertown. He advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt from Connor Hanson. Easton Thury then grounded out to first base to make it two outs, but Lloyd then scored on an error to tie the game at 2-2.

Ben Althoff and Hirsch then walked back-to-back and Braedon Zuag hit an RBI single to make it a 3-2 game heading into the sixth inning. 

Brookings went one-two-three in the sixth and seventh inning and Watertown picked up the victory. Watertown out-hit the ‘Chutes 5-4. Brookings had three errors and Watertown had four.

Game 2

• Watertown 6, Brookings 2

The ‘Chutes were unable to get their offense going to score runs and six-run second inning lifted Watertown to doubleheader sweep.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning and Watertown jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the second inning.

Watertown scored their six runs on two sacrifice flies, a fielder’s choice, a passed ball and a single. The ‘Chutes had four errors in the game.

Brookings was able to hold Watertown scoreless the rest of the game, but were unable to score many runs of their own. 

They cut the lead to 6-2 in the sixth inning. Max Struck and Kyle Bauer hit back-to-back singles and Henry Hammerich reached on an error to score Struck and Bauer, Hammerich was thrown out trying to get to second base to end the inning.

In the seventh inning, Honkomp and Ammann were able to get on base with one out. A Witte hit into a fielder’s choice and Struck grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

Mason Bebensee started the game for the ‘Chutes and he pitched four innings. He gave up six runs, five earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Bauer pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs on no hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Ammann went 2-for-2 and Struck went 2-for-4. Bauer went 1-for-2, Bebensee went 1-for-3 and Hammerich went 1-for-4.
