Chester, Garretson win BEC crowns

FLANDREAU – The Chester Area girls and Garretson boys won team titles in the Big East Conference Track & Field Meet on Friday at Flier Booster Club Stadium.

Regional meets are Thursday.

Girls

The Flyers totaled 135 points, as Parker (106) was second, Sioux Valley (101.5) third and Flandreau (101) fourth.

Lynsey Stevens and Nikole Ziegler led the charge for the Cossacks.

Stevens won the triple jump with a mark of 34 feet, 7 inches.

She was second in the long jump at 15-5 3/4 and tied for third in the high jump after clearing 4-11.

Stevens won all three events at the Lake Central Conference Meet on Tuesday.

Ziegler placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.2 seconds and matched that finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a 52.2 clocking.

She was runner-up in the high jump (5-1) and third in the long jump (14-11 1/4).

The Fliers’ Madeline Hursey was a double winner. She placed first in the 1,600 in 5:37.3 and the 3,200 with a time of 12:33.6.

Elizabeth Hursey was runner-up in both the 800 (2:37.1) and 1,600 (5:50.7).

Hannah Parsley finished second in the 400 in 1:02.9. Elle Thompson was runner-up in the discus with a heave of 110-6.

Boys

The Blue Dragons (166) edged the Flyers (163.5) for the championship.

Garretson entered the final event of the day – 4x400-meter relay – with a 0.5-point lead over Chester. The Blue Dragons won the event in 3:43.1 and the Flyers took second in 3:43.3.

Sioux Valley took fourth in the team standings with 108.5 points. Flandreau (68) was fifth.

The Cossacks’ Max Nielson won the 3,200 in 11:19.6. He placed first in the event at the LCC earlier in the week with a 11:38.1 clocking.

Tyge Schiller, Nick Strasburg, Noah Puetz and Tayt Vincent prevailed in the medley relay in 3:55.8.

Strasburg took second in the shot put (43-6) and third in the triple jump (38-1 3/4). Lane VanderWal added a third-place showing in the long jump (18-7 3/4).

The Fliers’ Dalyn Bakkedahl was second in the triple jump at 38-11.
