Chester Area sweeps Region 4B team titles; Dolphin girls take 3B; Cossacks sweep 2A

ELKTON – Chester Area swept the team titles at the Region 4B Track & Field Meet on Thursday.

The Flyer girls had 126 team points, while Hanson (108.33) was second and Howard (95.33) third. Colman-Egan (74.5) finished sixth, Elkton-Lake Benton (56) seventh and Oldham-Ramona/Rutland (seven) 10th.

For the boys, Chester totaled 130 points as Colman-Egan (114) finished second and Canistota (73) ended up third. ELB (68) took fourth and ORR (52) was eighth.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for the Class B State Track & Field Meet, to be held Friday-Saturday, May 26-27, at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Girls

Colman-Egan’s Haleigh Nicol won the triple jump with a mark of 32 feet, 4 1/2 inches. Teammate Sami Lebert was runner-up at 32-0 1/2.

ELB’s Samantha Schindler cleared 7-6 to win the pole vault as teammate Karlie Christensen (7-0) placed second.

Callie Otkin, Julia Drietz, Portia Weishar and Marie Robbins crossed second in the 4x800-meter relay (11 minutes, 33 seconds).

Boys

Walker Olivier won two individual events and a relay for Colman-Egan.

He took first in the 110-meter (14.8) and 300-meter (41.5) hurdles events, and was runner-up in the 200 (23.0).

Cole Kriech edged Kade Groos for the 400-meter title as both runners had 52-second clockings.

Malik Poppenga’s mark of 40-2 3/4 was good for the win in the triple jump. He was runner-up in the long jump (19-10 3/4).

Olivier, Bodee Groos, Kade Groos and Kriech won the 4x400 relay in 3:40.9. Devin Lohr, Bodee Groos, Kade Groos and Kriech took the medley title with a 3:56.9 clocking

Lohr, Kriech, Bodee Groos and Kade Groos placed second in the 4x200 (1:35.1).

The Elks’ Miles Harming won the 3,200 meters in 11:10.4.

Hunter Nielsen cleared 11 feet as he took first in the pole vault.

The Raiders’ Jack Olson, Connor Spilde, Peyton Roti and Casey Renaas won the 4x800 in 9:18.1. ELB’s Grant DeRuyter, Devin Sopko, Harming and Cole DeRuyter were second in 9:23.2.

ORR’s Bennet Trygstad finished second in both the shot put (48-4) and discus (137-1).

Region 3B

DE SMET – The Deubrook Area girls and James Valley Christian boys claimed team championships at the Region 4B Track & Field Meet on Thursday.

The Dolphin girls totaled 147 team points as JVC (100) was second and Wolsey-Wessington (83) third. Lake Preston (80) finished fourth, Estelline (67) sixth and Arlington (62) seventh.

In the boys’ competition, the Vikings finished with 138 points, with the Warbirds (114.5) placing second and Castlewood (99.5) third. The Dolphins (99) were fourth, the Divers (51) took seventh, the Cardinals (26) finished eighth and the Redmen (24) ended up ninth.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for the Class B State Track & Field Meet, to be held Friday-Saturday, May 26-27, at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Girls

The Dolphins won eight events on the day.

Shaylee DeBeer finished first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 27.93 seconds and the triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, 3 inches.

Ashley Vandermeer took home top honors in the long jump at 16-3 3/4. She was second in both the 200 (25.92) and triple jump (33-10).

Andrea Vandermeer won the 1,600 in 5:39.35 and was runner-up in the 3,200 (12:26.08).

Josie Olsen crossed first in the 3,200 with a 12:25.41 clocking. Cortney Bauman was the winner in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.62 seconds.

DeBeer, Ashley Vandermeer, Olsen and Bauman won the 4x400-meter relay in 4:17.74. Andrea Vandermeer slid in for Ashley in the 4x800 as the Dolphins had a winning time of 10:08.11.

Sarah Urevig was second in the long jump (14-9).

The Divers’ Rylie Brown won the 100 in 12.57 seconds and the 200 with a 25.88 clocking. Karley DeKnikker crossed first in the 100 hurdles in 16.7.

Ashley Neely, Lindsay Hillestad, Karley DeKnikker and Brown finished first in the 4x100 relay with a 53.51-second clocking. Ashlyn DeKnikker replaced Karley in the 4x200 as the Divers won the event in 1:51.63.

Ashlyn DeKnikker was second in the 1,600 (5:54.02). Lexis Curry, Hillestad, Neely and Ashlyn DeKnikker were second in the medley relay (4:40.96).

The Lady Redmen’s Tiffany Vohlken was runner-up in the discus (99-0) and teammate Alexis Vomacka matched that finish in the pole vault (6-0).

The Cardinals’ Jayna Haufschild cleared 8 feet to win the pole vault, while Brylee Hennrich took second in the 400 (1:02.68).

Boys

Deubrook had a trio of second-place finishers – Aczel Garcia in the 400 (55.84), Jacob Johnson in the 110 hurdles (17.03) and Ryan Berndt in the triple jump (40-3).

Lake Preston’s Brock Bumann swept the hurdles events, winning in the 110 in 16.03 seconds and the 300 with a 43.15 clocking. Rhett McMasters took second in the 3,200 (11:14.65).

Arlington’s Logan Brandriet ended up second in the pole vault (8-6).

Region 2A

CLARK – Sioux Valley swept the team titles at the Region 2A Track & Field Meet on Thursday.

The Cossack girls racked up 141 points, while Hamlin (127) was second and Redfield/ Doland (118) third.

On the boys’ side, Sioux Valley totaled 132 points. Great Plains Lutheran (109.5) and Hamlin (102) were second and third, respectively.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for the Class A State Track & Field Meet, which begins Friday, May 26, in Tea before concluding the following day at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Girls

Nikole Ziegler and Lynsey Stevens led the charge for the Cossacks with a pair of wins apiece.

Ziegler crossed first in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.83 seconds and was tops in the high jump after clearing 5 feet. She was runner-up in the long jump (15-6).

Stevens had another solid day in the jumps, winning the long jump with a mark of 16-1 1/2 and the triple jump at 34-4. She placed second in the high jump (4-11).

Rachel Miller won the 100-meter dash with a 13.12-second clocking. Cheyanne Kamps took second in the 200 (27.36).

Baylea Lucas, Reagan Johnson, Kamps and Miller placed first in the 4x200-meter relay in 1:54.04.

Boys

Sioux Valley’s Nick Strasburg won the triple jump with a mark of 40-2 and the shot put with a heave of 45-8 1/2.

Cole Gross placed first in the 200 in 23.74 seconds.

Taking second for the Cossacks were Tyge Schiller in the 100 (11.5), Max Nielson in the 3,200 (10:55.55), Silas Larsen in the shot put (42-3 1/4) and Brennan Stoltenberg in the discus (114-2).

Daymein Lucas, Noah Puetz, Schiller and Gross won the 4x100 in 46.17 seconds.

Schiller, Strasburg, Puetz and Gross placed second in the 4x200 (1:35.04). Schiller, Puetz, Gross and Tayt Vincent were second in the medley relay (3:57.99).

Region 3A

MADISON – The Madison girls and Sioux Falls Christian boys won team titles at the Region 3A Track & Field Meet on Thursday.

The Lady Bulldogs tallied 187 points to out-distance the second-place Chargers (143) and third-place Dell Rapids (131). Flandreau was fourth at 96.

On the boys’ side, Christian piled up 213 points as the Quarriers (151) were second and Bulldogs (127) third. The Fliers (59) finished sixth.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for the Class A State Track & Field Meet, which begins Friday, May 26, in Tea before concluding the following day at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Girls

Flandreau’s Madeline Hursey was a double qualifier after winning the 3,200-meter run in 12 minutes, 38.89 seconds and finish second in the 1,600 with a 5:39.53 clocking.

Ashtyn Bertram sprinted to the win in the 100 in a time of 13.45 seconds.

Kylie Bertram, Isabella Pavlis, Cassidy Keith and Ashtyn Bertram were second in the 4x100-meter relay (53:32).

Boys

Luke Behrens crossed second in the 400 with a time of 54.16 seconds.

Mark Wendelgass Relays

HURON – The Bobcats won nine events in their final regular-season meet, the Mark Wendelgass Relays, on Thursday at Tiger Stadium.

The Class AA State Track & Field Meet begins Friday, May 26, in Brandon before concluding the following day at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Girls

Madison Gray won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 25.21 seconds. Ellie Abraham was tops in the 1,600 with a 5:09.5 clocking.

Kailee Bartels placed first in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.96. Amanda Flores-Schulte took first in the shot put with a mark of 40 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

Brookings placed first in the 4x100 (50.67), 4x200 (1:55.8) and medley (4:31.23) relays en route to taking the team title.

Boys

Isaac Conrad crossed first in the 800 in 2:04.22. Charlie Wang won the 3,200 with a 10:33.46 clocking.
