BROOKINGS – The Brookings Bullets 16U team swept a doubleheader against Milbank on Saturday. The Bullets won game one, 9-7, and then took game two, 3-1.

Bullets sweep Milbank in doubleheader at home

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Bullets 16U team swept a doubleheader against Milbank on Saturday. The Bullets won game one, 9-7, and then took game two, 3-1.

The Bullets are now 3-13 and play a doubleheader at Watertown on Wednesday. The first game is scheduled to start at noon.

Game One

 Brookings 9, Milbank 7

Brookings went up 8-4 in the third and didn’t look back as the Chutes took game one.

Milbank struck first with three runs in the first. The first run was scored on a wild pitch and the next two were on an error and a fielder’s choice.

The Bullets would answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Jonathan Kahler hit a two-out single and then scored on a single from Jacob Peterson. Brookings then had the bases loaded and Jackson Hunter was walked to make it 3-2.

Milbank pushed its lead to 4-2 in the top of the second with an RBI single. Brookings then scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Blake Waterman scored on an error and Ryan Lockrem and Luke Honkomp scored on bases loaded walks to make it 5-4.

The Bullets then added three more runs in the bottom of the third. Peterson came to the plate with runners on second and third and hit a double to score both runners. Tane Friedrich followed that with a double of his own and Peterson scored to make it 8-4.

Milbank cut into the lead with two runs in the fourth. Brookings added another run in the fifth on an RBI single from Kahler. Milbank was able to score one more run, but that was it and Brookings came away with a 9-7 victory.

Peterson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Kahler was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Friedrich and Aidan Austreim were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Honkomp was 1-for-2 and Lockrem was 1-for-3.

Honkomp pitched the first four innings for Brookings and gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Lockrem pitched the final three innings and gave up one earned run one hit, with one strikeout and one walk.

Game Two

 Brookings 3, Milbank 1 (5 inn.)

The Bullets had just two hits in the game, but they were able to get the win.

Neither team scored in the first two innings and Brookings broke the tie with two runs in the third. Jackson Hornby and Yuji Numata each walked to lead off the inning. Hornby scored on an error and Numata scored on an Austreim single to make it 2-0.

Brookings would add another run in the fourth. The Bullets had the bases loaded with one out after three-straight walks. Darrion Dubro would then score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Milbank scored one run in the fifth, but that was it and the game ended due to time.

Hunter pitched all five innings for Brookings. He gave up one earned run on five hits, with four strikeouts and three walks.

Austreim was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Honkomp was 1-for-2 as well.
