BROOKINGS – A Bruce man was airlifted to Sioux Falls after a Brookings man accidentally shot him in the leg Saturday night, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
The Brookings man, 18-year-old Kyle Hendrix, was arrested and charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring reported. Hendrix is free on a $2,000 cash-only bond.
The 20-year-old victim was not identified.
Hendrix is also currently free on a $15,000 cash-only bond for an unrelated felony charge of terrorist threat. That charge alleges that on March 18, Hendrix posted threatening statements on Twitter. The police received multiple calls about the Tweets.
This Saturday’s shooting was reported at 7:10 p.m. and happened on a gravel road near the intersection of 210th Street and 468th Avenue, northwest of Brookings. Sebring said the victim had been accidentally shot in the leg with a .45 caliber pistol.
“It was found that the owner of the pistol, 18-year-old Kyle Noah Hendrix of Brookings, was showing the pistol to the 20-year-old victim when it accidently discharged,” Sebring said. “The 20-year-old victim was transported to the Brookings Hospital by the Brookings Ambulance, where he was later airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital.”
Also responding to the scene was the Brookings Police Department.
