BROOKINGS – Josie Bono and Emily Rystrom scored two goals apiece as the Bobcats beat Huron 7-1 in an Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ soccer match Monday evening at Fishback Soccer Park.

“I thought it was great,” said Brookings coach Nathan Tritle. “I don’t think the field conditions were 100 percent, so I liked how my team adapted and we kept the balls on the ground; if you kick them too much in the air, the ball will skid and skip out. We had a lot of through balls in between their back four. And Alexis McGuire, every time a through ball was played, she got on it and then put a ball into the box and it was dangerous. So I was really proud of how we played.”

McGuire and Bono both picked up a pair of assists.

Bono got it going with an unassisted tally in the fourth minute and Rystrom got free for a goal in the 18th minute to make it 2-0.

Ava Burns scored on an assist from McGuire 7 minutes later as the Bobcats took a 3-0 advantage into halftime.

Bono found the back of the net again early in the second, as McGuire assisted.

Rystrom’s tally in the 54th minute gave Brookings a 5-0 lead.

The Tigers took advantage of a Bobcat miscue to find the scoreboard later on, as Nightin Gay Day was credited with a goal.

Sierra Hansen had a goal – assisted by Bono – and Grace Mork also scored to provide for the final margin.

Mork earned the win in goal.

For Huron (0-3-0, 0-3-0), goalkeeper Hsa Wah Paw made 23 saves in the loss as she faced a flurry of shots.

“Huron doesn’t have very big players, so that tends to be normal for us that we were able to get on their backs and were able to beat them to the ball,” Tritle said when asked about his team dominating possession. “So I’m happy that even when we got up by several goals, we continued to put on the pressure. That’s what I was looking for. And the girls have to know when to take advantage of things like that, when they’re bigger than the opponent, they’re faster; and they did.”

Bono put nine shots on goal, Rystrom six and McGuire five.

It marked the first victory of the season for the Bobcats (1-2-0, 1-1-0).

“It wouldn’t be as important if we hadn’t lost to Watertown,” Tritle said about putting one in the win column. “Watertown is our rival, a lot of these girls play together on club teams, so I think (losing to Watertown) took a lot of air out of our tires.

“So this was really important; I think more important, maybe, even than normal.”

The Bobcats beat the Tigers 2-1 in the junior varsity match.

Brookings travels to Harrisburg for a matchup Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m.
