BROOKINGS – Brookings Fire Chief Darrell Hartmann was arrested on suspicion of DUI on Friday night, according to Brookings Police.
“On (Friday), March 19, at 11:56 p.m., Chief Darrell Hartmann was stopped by an officer of the Brookings Police Department for a traffic violation. Roadside tests were administered, and Chief Hartmann was subsequently arrested for DUI,” Brookings Police Chief Dave Erickson wrote in an email to the Register Monday.
No other details of the arrest were provided. Messages seeking comment from Hartmann were not immediately returned.
State’s Attorney Dan Nelson says police brought Hartmann to the county jail and he was released on bond Saturday morning, KELO-TV reported.
“He’ll appear on that complaint, alleging that he committed driving under the influence,” Nelson said, according to an Associated Press report. “He’ll have an opportunity to plead guilty, not guilty, no contest at that initial hearing. If he pleads not guilty, there will be a jury trial that will be set.”
Nelson says despite Hartmann’s title this case will be handled just like any other DUI charge.
A post on the Brookings County State’s Attorney Office Facebook page says Hartmann’s initial court appearance is set for 9 a.m. April 26.
When asked about Hartmann’s employment status with the city, City Manager Paul Briseno said the city’s policy is to not publicly comment on personnel matters.
