Brookings dancer Kate Struck wins two gold medals at Dance Worlds in Florida

Kate Struck of Brookings competed in the Dance Worlds at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, in April and her team, the Champion Legacy Dance Academy, out of Sioux Falls, came back with two gold medals and a silver medal.

The Champion Legacy Dance Academy won gold medals in the coed open jazz competition and the coed open pom competition. They also won a silver in the in the small senior hip hop competition.

The Dance Worlds is a competition that teams try to earn bids to all season long. The Champion Legacy Dance Academy earned seven paid bids this year and Struck was in six of those routines. Once at the Dance Worlds, teams start in the semifinals and compete for a spot in the finals. Dance Worlds had 4,219 dancers on 308 teams that were represented by 15 countries.

Struck, who is a ninth grader at Brookings High School, taught herself how to dance by watching YouTube videos during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the past three years has traveled to Sioux Falls five to seven times a week for practices.
