Brookings beats No. 1 O’Gorman

BROOKINGS – The Bobcats knocked off No. 1 Sioux Falls O’Gorman, 1-0, during girls’ soccer action on a warm Saturday afternoon at Fishback Soccer Park.

“It was really nice to see everything that we’ve been working so hard to do come together,” said BHS coach Kelli Herman, whose team improved to 3-5-2. “All of our girls just played so well collectively together today. We’ve been talking about confidence, we’ve been talking about mentality and now it’s all coming together exactly when we need it to.”

The Lady Knights, who entered the day leading the state in seed points, fell to 7-2-2.

OG possessed the ball for much of the match and totaled a 29-6 advantage in shots, including 16-4 on goal.

However, the Lady Knights couldn’t finish and the Bobcats made them pay.

Emily Rystrom split a pair of defenders and beat the O’Gorman keeper for a goal early in the second half.

Grace Mork made 16 saves in the shutout.

Herman said communication was key in the defensive effort.

“And making sure everyone had their marks, and knowing what they needed to do and communicating that,” she added. “As girls, we sometimes tend to hold a grudge if someone is yelling at us and we were talking about making sure we hold each other accountable and it’s not because they’re mad at you, it’s because we have a job to do and our job is to make sure that everyone is marked up.”

As for beating one of the top teams in the state?

“I think that’s huge for our program; I think it’s big for the girls,” Herman noted. “But that’s just one team; now we still have two more to go to finish out the regular season.

“This last week we’ve been talking about how these last three games are going to be our toughest games because we knew that those are going to be the top three of five teams in the state. So we just know that we need to do our due diligence. Yes, it’s a great win, and we win with class and we lose with class, but now we still have to focus – we have two more games ahead of us.”

Jillian Barkus stopped three shots for the Lady Knights.

Brookings wraps up the regular season with a pair of home matches this week, taking on Yankton on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
