Brookings basketball teams fall against Huron

BROOKINGS – Huron held off the Bobcats for a 51-46 victory in boys’ basketball action Tuesday at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

Brookings grabbed its only lead of the game – 40-39 – on a Nick Schefers 3-pointer with 4:42 remaining in the game.

However, Brandon Decker answered with a trey for the Tigers following a Jaren Schley offensive rebound with 3:31 showing on the clock and the guests never trailed again.

Reilyn Zavesky hit a pair of foul shots with 3:01 to go and Derick Siemonsma scored in the paint with 1:29 left to extend the margin 46-40.

Decker, who ended up 5-of-6 from deep, and Schley both totaled 17 points.

Huron had a unique first quarter.

The Tigers were 7-of-8 from the field – all 3-pointers – and 1-of-2 at the foul line while building a 22-9 lead. They didn’t score again until the 18-second mark of the second, when Schley scored down low. He hit a deep 3 2 seconds before the break to make it 27-18.

It was 33-30 through three.

Schley’s 3 following a Kley Hae offensive board with 7:32 left gave Huron a 36-30 cushion.

Schefers hit a 3 and Henry Hammrich scored on a fast break to cut it to 36-35 with 7:01 left.

Kranzler countered with a 3, before Hammrich scored, leaving the score at 39-37 in favor of the Tigers with 5:09 remaining.

Hammrich scored 16 points and Schefers and Zach Moe added 10 apiece.

Huron ended up 11-of-26 from long range while improving to 2-5.

Brookings (1-6) is host to Harrisburg on Thursday at 7 p.m.

HURON – The Tigers led 14-9 after a quarter, 31-17 at halftime and 47-23 through three.

Isabella Shreeve dropped in a game-high 16 points and Tenley Buddenhagen added 15.

Huron was 11-for-35 on 3-pointers, while Brookings ended up 0-for-16.

Ainsley Shelsta posted a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds for the ‘Cats.

Huron improved to 5-4.

Brookings (0-7) heads to Harrisburg for a 7 p.m. game Thursday.
