The next installment of Great American Read Books vs. Movies starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, with the movie screening of “The Great Gatsby” at the Brookings Public Library.

Wednesday, July 18

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Brookings Public Library’s Super Special Wednesdays continues with The Hanson Family at 1 and 3 p.m. July 18. Come to the library to see Mark Hanson, two-time Guiness World Record holder for speed juggling, his national unicycle champion daughter, Christa, and the rest of the family perform amazing tricks.

The Aurora American Legion Auxiliary invites new residents of Aurora and the surrounding area to a meet and greet  from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Little Hall in Aurora. A free supper will be served, and auxiliary members will greet all new residents of the community

The Brookings Beading Group meets from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Brookings Public Library. Bring your projects to work on and spend quality beading time with people who enjoy your passion.

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Wednesday, July 18. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

Thursday, July 19

White Pioneer Days kick off Thursday, July 19, with the KCountry CookOut from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at First Bank & Trust on Main Street, White. Find a full schedule of events online at http://www.whitesd.com/pioneerdays/.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

South Dakota State University’s Volga Research Farm will host its annual Summer Tour on Thursday, July 19, at the farm located at 21260 464th Ave., Volga. The tour begins at 4 p.m. and ends at dusk. 

The event, free and open to the public, will feature plot tours highlighting research happening on the farm, as well as presentations and demonstrations on weed management, cover crops, crop and insect management, and weather updates by SDSU faculty and SDSU Extension staff. A meal will be provided.

The summer concert series Downtown at Sundown continues its 2018 season from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, July 19, in the 300 block of Fifth Street. The headliner this week is David Gerald. All the way from Detroit, Gerald is bringing his brand of blues, R&B and rock to the stage. His blues-infused rock and soul hybrid hits all the right notes, throwing it back to Albert King, B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Expect to hear some classic tunes mixed with original songs.

The family-friendly event also includes food and retail vendors and free kids’ activities. Admission is free.

The next Third Thursday at McCrory Gardens is set for 6:30 p.m. July 19. In “McCrory’s Most Weeded,” head gardener Chris Schlenker will introduce attendees to the most prevalent weeds at the gardens.

Jennifer Pharr Davis, a hiker, author, speaker and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, will give a presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at the Brookings Public Library. Pharr Davis, who has covered more than 14,000 miles of long-distance trails on six different continents, will share stories and images of her adventures as well as readings from her book and answering questions.

Her book will be available for purchase at the program, which is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the library at 692-9407.

A Brookings Regional Humane Society fundraiser, an exclusive premiere of “Mama Mia! Here We Go Again,” starts at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at Cinema 8. The $20 tickets include wine and appetizers and the movie showing at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Humane Society in advance and at the theater, if available. All proceeds benefit the Humane Society.

Friday, July 20

White Pioneer Days continue Friday, July 20, with four-person scramble golf tournament from 8 a.m.-12:45 p.m. and from 1-4:45 p.m.; a bean bag tournament on Main Street, 7 p.m., sign in at Lefty’s by 6 p.m.; and karaoke by Unique Entertainment, 9 p.m.-1 a.m., downtown by Lefty’s.

The Brookings Public Library will host a kids’ movie matinee at 1 p.m. Friday, July 20, with the screening of “The Little Mermaid.”

A Benefit for Baby Olivia will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, July 20, at Brookings Christian Church, 424 Eighth St. The event includes a BBQ supper, bake sale and silent auction, with proceeds going to Olivia’s family to help with medical expenses.

Elkton Hero Days kick off in Elkton Friday, July 20, and continue through Sunday, July 22. 

Friday activities include a bubble parade starting at the city park and ending on Main Street, 4:30 p.m.; scavenger hunt starting at the post office; car show and judging, rescue vehicle tours and walking taco stand on Main Street, 5-8 p.m.; painting class at the community center, 6-9 p.m.; and live music by Black Water Band at the Elkton Municipal Lounge, 9 p.m.

Brookings Community Theatre presents the musical “Annie” July 20-22 and July 27-29 in V.A. Bell Auditorium at the Brookings High School. Showtime is 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $12 for seniors, students and children, $15 for adults and $5 for kids under 8 and can be purchased at Brookings Book Company and The Optical Shop in advance, at the door starting one hour before the show, and online at www.BrookingsCommunityTheatre.org.

Saturday, July 21

White Pioneer Days continue Saturday, July 21, in White. Events for the day include: 8 a.m., co-ed softball tourney at the athletic complex; 9 a.m., fun run/walk at the high school, volleyball tourney, crafts at McKnight Hall and the city park, and the historical museum, log cabin and school house open; 11 a.m. parade; noon, car show and chili cookoff begin; 12:30 p.m. plate drop at the park; 12:40 p.m. sand dig; 1 p.m. inflatables, laser tag and bingo at the park; 1:15 p.m. pigeon auction; 1:30 p.m., games by Torque Fitness; 3 p.m., chili tasting and judging; 6:30 p.m., alumni banquet at Deubrook Gym; and 9 p.m.-1 a.m., music by The Roxbury Band at McKnight Hall.

Elkton Hero Days continue Saturday, July 21. Events include: 9 a.m., tee off of Emmett Memorial Golf Tournament at the Flandreau Golf Course, and start of the kiddie tractor pull; 11 a.m.-1 p.m., sign-up for the Emmett Memorial Poker Run; 11 a.m.-5 p.m., taco truck on Main Street; 2-5 p.m., water festival in the city park; 6 p.m., kids’ movie night at First Baptist Church on Main Street; 8 p.m., adult bean bag tournament and DJ at the Elkton Municipal Lounge.

The next Kids in the Kitchen at the Brookings Hy-Vee stars at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, in the club room. Cost is $8 per person and $5 for an additional sibling or friend. Register via the event on the store’s Facebook page.

A South Side Reunion will be held from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave. A potluck is planned for noon. Bring a dish to share or donate toward the main dish.

The Midwest Maidens will face The Greasers in a roller derby bout at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Larson Ice Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for students, seniors, military and civil service. Kids 10 and younger get in free.

Sunday, July 22

White Pioneer Days continue Sunday, July 22, in White. Events include a pancake feed at McKnight Hall from 8-11 a.m.; co-ed softball tourney starting at 8 a.m.; and a demolition derby on the west side of Main Street starting at 3 p.m.

Elkton Hero Days continue Sunday, July 22. Events for the day include: 10 a.m.-4 p.m., arts in the park/junk fest, face painting, dunk tank and snack shack at the park; 11 a.m., kickball tournament begins at the park; 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Bramble Zoo Mobile; 11 a.m.-5 p.m., inflatables and taco truck at the park; 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m., petting zoo at the park; noon-5 p.m., sidewalk chalk contest at First Baptist Church and pie social at the city park; 1-4 p.m. soccer carnival with obstacle course at the city park and bingo at the Elkton Community Center;

The Brookings Area Community Band presents its season finale, “At the Hop,” starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Pioneer Park. The concert will feature music from the recognizable pop icons of the ’50s and ’60s. In case of rain, the concert will move to the SDSU Performing Arts Center.
