BROOKINGS – Mayor Keith Corbett proclaimed Bring the Blue Week Oct. 21-26 in honor of ESPN’s “College GameDay” festivities at South Dakota State University this weekend.

“This is the first time ESPN College GameDay is being held in South Dakota,” Corbett said at Tuesday night’s Brookings City Council meeting.

He called on all of Brookings to wear blue “to support and celebrate the South Dakota State University students, staff and faculty.”

The City of Brookings has also asked residents to shine blue porch lights or blue string lights to show their support.

“The City of Brookings Government has challenged its community members to jack up their lights for the Jacks and blaze their blue,” a City of Brookings press release says.

“(We) are asking community members to swap out their current porch light for a blue bulb, and to dig into their holiday decorations to swag their yards with anything blue to celebrate their fandom. Multicolored lights can be combined by swapping out the multi colors for all blue bulbs; they can paint their reindeer blue. The city suggests that residents ‘do what you have to do to #BringTheBlue,’” the press release says.

The ESPN sports network announced Sunday it would come to Brookings and broadcast its three-hour Saturday pregame show as part of the Jackrabbits’ Dakota Marker football game against the North Dakota State University Bison. They will broadcast live from the College Green from 8-11 a.m. There is no admission.

Corbett pointed out ESPN made the decision to broadcast from the College Green; it was not the city’s decision, although they have been fielding calls about it.

Corbett thanked the city staff for all the work they have been doing with SDSU, law enforcement and ESPN to see that all the preparations associated with the event run smoothly.

“It’s a pretty exciting time in Brookings,” Corbett said.

College Green is located north and east of the Coughlin Campanile in the southwest quadrant of campus.
