Boys hockey: Brookings Rangers dominate in two wins over the weekend

The Brookings Rangers boys’ varsity team took it to their opponents over the weekend as the Rangers outscored the two teams they played 17-0.

Brookings beat Watertown on the road on Friday night, 9-0, then came on Saturday night and defeated Pierre, 8-0.

The Rangers have now won three straight after dropping their first two games. They will host Huron on Friday and then play Mitchell in Brookings on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

Friday

• Brookings 9, Watertown 0

WATERTOWN – Brookings outshot Watertown 37-10 and Addison Ronning had the shutout for the Rangers.

The Rangers scored just one of their nine goals in the first period. Jacob Khale got Brookings on the board with 6:12 left in the period and the goal was assisted by Breck Hirrschoff.

Hirrschoff would then score the first two goals of the second period. The first one came 5:31 into the period and was assisted by Zach Struck and Luke Honkomp. The second one was a power play goal with 12:31 left in the period and was assisted by Honkomp and Ronning.

Jay Harris made it 4-0 with 11:15 left in the period as he was set up by Chase Karch and Honkomp. Owen Schneider would net two more goals before the period ended. The first one came with 9:10 left in the period and was assisted by Honkomp and Breck Hirrschoff. Struck and Honkomp then set up Schneider for his second goal with 4:50 left in the second to make it 6-0. Both goals were on the power play.

Brookings scored three goals in the final period. Talon Hyde scored a goal with 11:47 left in the game and that was assisted by Jack Merritt. Jacob Khale then found the back of the net with 9:15 left and he was set up by Riley Linstad and Honkomp. Then it was Linstad’s turn as he scored with 6:36 left in the game and that was assisted by Schneider.

Saturday

• Brookings 8, Pierre 0

BROOKINGS – It was much of the same for the Rangers on Saturday night. They outshot the Capitals 34-14 and Kade Brecher had the shutout this time for Brookings.

The Rangers scored two goals in the first. Schneider scored the first goal on the power play with 14:02 left in the period and Struck assisted on it. Struck then found Honkomp for a power play goal with just under four minutes left in the period to make it 2-0.

Brookings added four goals in the second. Struck found the back of the net 1:35 into the period as he was set up by Hirrschoff and Khale. Hirrschoff then scored an unassisted goal 55 seconds later to make it 4-0. Cooper Deatherage scored his first goal of the weekend with 7:44 left in the period. That goal was assisted by Harris and Christopherson. Hirrschoff then got his second goal on the power play and on a set-up from Schneider and Linstad.

Struck would complete a hat trick with two goals in the third. The first came with 13:51 left in the game and it was power play goal assisted by Hirrschoff. He then scored an unassisted goal with 11:13 left in the game to make the final 8-0.

Brookings was 4-9 on the power play and Pierre was 0-2. The Capitals had 48 penalty minutes on 12 penalties and the Rangers had 16 penalty minutes on four penalties.
