Bombers Maroon sweeps doubleheader against SF East

BROOKINGS – Bombers Maroon improved to 26-8 on the season after sweeping a doubleheader against Sioux Falls East Monday night in Brookings.

Game 1

 Brookings 6, Sioux Falls East 5

The Bombers used a four-run sixth inning to come away with a walk-off win.

Brookings held Sioux Falls East scoreless in the top of the first inning and with two outs in the bottom of the inning they had a runner on second base. Austin Clark was at the plate and he flew out to the right fielder to end the inning.’

Each team went down one-two-three in the second inning. With one out in the top of the third, Sioux Falls East had the bases loaded. However, back-to-back infield pop-outs ended their half of the inning.

The Bombers then scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third. With one out, Griffin Bartles and David Brink walked. Jack Merrit then singled to load the bases up. Owen Schneider hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Bartles to score and Breck Hirrschoff hit Brink home with a single to make it 2-0 after three innings.

Sioux Falls East would respond in the top of the fourth inning and take its first lead of the game. With one out, they used three RBI singles and a fielder’s choice to take a 4-2 lead.

Brookings went down one-two-three in the bottom of the fourth and Sioux Falls East added to their lead in the top of the fifth. They used a lead-off single and a one-out single to take a 5-2 lead.

The Bombers once again were unable to get a runner on base in the bottom of the fifth, but were able to hold Sioux Falls East scoreless in the top of the sixth inning.

With the Bombers down to their final outs and trailing 5-2, they needed to put together a rally. The bottom of the sixth began with Merritt taking a walk and Schneider getting hit by a pitch. Hirrschoff then grounded out for the first out of the inning. Austin Clark and Nolan Miles then hit back-to-back singles to tie the game at 5-5. 

Cameron Girard then walked and Will Bauer singled to load the bases up with one out and give the Bombers a chance to get a walk-off win. Addison Ronning was at the plate, but that didn’t matter as Miles scored on a passed ball to give Brookings a thrilling walk-off victory.

Clark started the game for the Bombers and pitched four innings. He gave up four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Merritt pitched two innings for Brookings and gave up one run on four hits with no strikeouts and two walks.

Miles went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Hirrschoff went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Clark went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Merritt went 1-for-2. Schneider had an RBI without getting a hit.
