Bombers Maroon sweep Huron, push winning streak to 8

HURON – The Bombers Maroon swept Huron in a youth baseball doubleheader Tuesday to extend their winning streak to eight games.

Brookings took the opener 5-2 in six innings and dominated Game 2, winning 17-1 in three innings.

The Bombers Maroon (11-1) begin play in the Cubby’s Sports Bar & Grill Classic on Friday, taking on Sioux Falls West at 1 p.m. and Canton at 5:30 p.m. at Erv Huether Field.

Game 1

 Brookings 5, Huron 2 (6 inn.)

The Bombers Maroon scored three runs in the second inning to grab a 4-2 lead en route to the win.

Jack Merritt and Austin Clark combined to pitch five scoreless innings in relief.

Merritt took over on the mound in the second and threw three innings of one-hit ball, walking three and striking out one, to earn the win.

Clark notched the save after giving up a pair of hits with three strikeouts and a walk in two innings.

Breck Hirrschoff and Nolan Miles both had a hit and an RBI.

Clark, Griffen Bartels and Will Bauer added a single apiece.

Merritt and Bartels both scored twice.

Game 2

 Brookings 17, Huron 1 (3 inn.)

Clark and Hirrschoff had big games at the plate as the Bombers Maroon scored six runs in each of the first two innings and tacked on five more in the third.

Clark was 3-for-3 with a double and six RBIs.

Hirrschoff went 4-for-4 with three RBIs.

Addison Ronning earned the win after giving up one run – unearned – on one hit with a pair of strikeouts and a walk in two innings. David Brink struck out two of the three batters he faced in the third.

Bartels was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Bauer added double and an RBI. Tate Helmbolt drove in a run and Merritt singled.

Clark, Hirrschoff, Bauer, Merritt, Brink and Miles each scored twice.
