BROOKINGS – Two seven-run innings propelled Brandon Valley to a 14-3 win in the first game of a doubleheader against the Brookings Bombers Black on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings responded with a 6-3 win in the back end of the twin bill to salvage a split.

Brookings is at Watertown today for a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Watertown Stadium before taking a handful of days off for the Independence Day holiday weekend.

Game One

 Brandon Valley 14, Brookings 3 (5 inn.)

The visitors jumped all over Brookings starting pitcher Talon Hyde, taking advantage of seven hits, two errors, and a hit batter in the first inning as Brandon Valley opened a 7-0 lead before the Bombers had a chance to bat.

Brookings got a run back in the bottom of the first. Tre Christopherson singled to open the inning and both Hyde and Jase Bauer were hit by pitches. Jones Huntimer’s ground ball resulted in an error that allowed Christopherson to score and cut the lead to 7-1.

Neither team would score until the bottom of the third inning. Christopherson again led off with a base hit and would then steal second. Bauer grounded out and a hustling Christopherson scored from second to cut the deficit to 7-2.

Three straight singles from Huntimer, Jay Harris, and Ryder Anderson loaded the bases, and a passed ball allowed Huntimer to scamper home for the Bombers’ third run of the game, trimming the Brandon Valley lead to 7-3.

Brookings, however, would not score again, and Brandon Valley scored seven runs in their half of the fourth inning on six hits, two walks, and an error.

Needing two runs to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth, Brookings got a runner on with two outs but could do no more as the game closed after five innings by run rule.

Christopherson had two of Brookings’ five hits while Huntimer, Harris, and Anderson added one each. Bauer and Huntimer recorded single runs batted in.

Hyde took the loss on the mound, allowing 12 runs (seven earned) on 11 hits, walking four, and striking out one.

Game Two

 Brookings 6, Brandon Valley 3

Brookings started with a big inning of their own in game two, scoring five runs to open a 5-0 lead.

Christopherson led off with a walk but was caught stealing second. Hyde, Bauer, and Harris singled to load the bases and Huntimer earned an RBI the hard way, wearing a pitch to force in Hyde for the 1-0 lead.

Anderson walked to force in another run and after a strikeout, Breck Wilson’s single scored two to double the lead at 4-0. Anderson would score on the play, as well, scoring while Brandon Valley attempted to tag Wilson, upping the lead to 5-0. Nolan Wagner would also single but he and Wilson would eventually be stranded after a strike out.

Brandon Valley got a run back in the second inning but Brookings answered in the bottom of the third to regain their five-run cushion.

Anderson tripled with one out and would score on Kysin Reuer’s ground out.

The visiting Lynx scored twice in the fourth to cut the lead back to 6-3 but would get no closer as each team traded zeros the remainder of the game.

Brookings finished with 12 hits; Christopherson, Hyde, Anderson, and Wilson had two each. Bauer, Harris, Huntimer, and Wagner singled.

Wilson finished with three runs batted in while Huntimer, Anderson, and Reuer had one each.

Christopherson pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs while scattering six hits, striking out three and not issuing a walk.
