Bobcats take on Governors in Homecoming game at Dykhouse

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Brookings as the 3-1 Bobcats play host to 3-1 Pierre in Friday’s Homecoming game at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

“Pierre is big, athletic and has a quarterback (Junior Garrett Stout, 6-1, 185) that is playing really, really well,” said BHS head coach Lee Schmidt of the ‘Cats’ upcoming opponent. “Just some tough kids; good all-around athletes on the line and skill positions – it’s going to be a tall task on Friday.

“They’re doing things a little bit different (than last year) – it’s not quite as wide open – they’re running an unbalanced, double tight (end) line, passing out of it and running out of it. They seem to be a little bit more balanced – they present a real problem.”

After dropping their home opener, 24-14 to Harrisburg, the Governors grabbed two road wins – 28-17 over the Bucks in Yankton and 69-7 over the Patriots at Box Elder – before shutting down Huron, 34-7, last week in Pierre.

The Bobcats sandwiched a pair of wins around their only loss – opening with a 24-23 road win over Yankton; falling 28-14 to Mitchell at home; and then shutting out Spearfish, 51-0, at Dykhouse Stadium. Brookings ruined the Arrows’ Homecoming festivities with a 27-14 win at Watertown Stadium last week.

“(The Watertown win) gave us some credibility. Like I said, I think it’s just going to be a really tough ball game – one of those ball games where both teams are improving and getting better week by week, so it’s going to be whoever doesn’t turn the ball over; who can create some long fields for the other team, so special teams are going to be important.

“It’s just going to be one of those nights where we are going to have to play good football for four quarters just like we have the last two games.”

So far, a propensity to turn the ball over seems to be one of the Governors’ few weaknesses. Other than Douglas, Pierre had two interceptions against Harrisburg; two more INTs in Yankton, in addition to a fumble; and two fumbles against Huron.

Despite a dreary week in Brookings, game time forecast calls for clear skies and cooler temps – a perfect night for high school football.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at DJD Stadium.
