Bobcats split doubleheader with Cobblers

RAPID CITY – The Bobcats let the first game of a double header with Rapid City Central get away from them, but didn’t in the second to salvage a split with the Cobblers on Thursday night.

Central rallied in the seventh to pull out an 8-7 win in the opener before Brookings came back to win the nightcap, 4-2.

The Bobcats continue play out West with a doubleheader against Douglas on Friday, with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.

Game 1

 R.C. Central 8, Brookings 7

The Cobblers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a one-run win in the opener.

The Bobcats led 7-6 with one out in the seventh before Central’s Trey Brandhagen hit a double and moved to third on Ty Godkin’s single. Ethan Byrd drew a walk to load the bases, and then, all three runners moved up on a wild pitch by Jackson Krogman as Brandhagen scored to tie the game at 7-7.

Mason Richards’ single to left field on a 2-1 count plated Godkin with the winning run.

Brookings scored a pair of runs in the top of the first when Daniel Messerli led off with a double and scored on Justin Devine’s single. Tyler Kreutner followed with a double to plate Devine for the 2-0 lead.

The Cobblers answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and then, tacked on three in the third to go up 4-2.

The Bobcats retook the lead in the fifth after Devine doubled to open the frame and scored on Jacob Schoon’s one-out single. Christian Mediger drew a base on balls and advanced to second on Rhett Zelinsky’s fielder’s choice.

Tanner Shepardson’s two-out single plated Mediger and Zelinsky ended up scoring on an error by the left fielder for a 5-4 Brookings lead.

Brookings added a run in the sixth after Cole Mahlum took one for the team to lead off the inning. He stole second and scored on a Messerli single for a 6-4 advantage.

Central tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when Godkin reached on an error and advanced to second on a balk call on Krogman’s pickoff attempt. Richards drew a walk with one out and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. After Krogman struck out Jackson McGough for the second out, Max Lowe singled to plate Godkin as Richards moved to third, and then, scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-6.

Brookings scratched out a run in the top of the seventh to retake the lead. Zelinsky singled with one out; advanced to second on Shepardson’s ground out; stole third; and then scored on Mahlum’s single for a 7-6 lead, but the ‘Cats couldn’t shut the door as Rapid City rallied for the win.

Krogman suffered the loss in relief after allowing two earned runs on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Schoon tossed the first three frames and gave up four earned runs on five hits and a walk with four Ks.

Aaron Iverson earned the win in an inning of relief – giving up one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts. Sand went six innings and let in six earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.

Game 2

 Brookings 4, R.C. Central 2

The Bobcats got out to the early lead with a pair of runs in the second; and then, added single runs in the fourth and sixth while limited Central to just two runs – one in the fourth and one in the seventh – for the win.

Mediger walked to lead off the second; advanced to second on a wild pitch; moved to third on Brady Amman’s single; and then, scored on Krogman’s base hit.

Messerli followed up with another single to plated Amman for the two-run lead.

With one out in the fourth, Messerli hit an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Devine’s groundout to make it 3-0.

The Cobblers took advantage of four walks in the bottom of the fourth to score and pull within 3-1, but Brookings got that run back in the sixth when Krogman walked, stole second and scored on Schoon’s two-out single.

Zelinsky hit a batter with one out in the seventh to give Central a baserunner, and then, issued two walks to load the bases before Ethan Byrd singled with two outs to plate Zach Hess for the final score.

Caden Wright earned the win on the mound after giving up one earned run over four innings of work on one hit and five walks with four strikeouts. Zelinksy picked up the save after allowing an unearned run on four walks with five strikeouts in three innings of relief.

Godkin suffered the loss through 3 1/3 innings of work after giving up three runs – two earned – on four hits with five walks and two Ks. Cameron Kor allowed an earned run on one hits and two walks with one strikeout over the final 3 2/3 frames.
