Bobcats host Russ Strande Invite, come in 4th, 6th

BROOKINGS – The Brookings boys and girls cross country teams hosted the annual Brookings Russ Strande Invite on Thursday afternoon, where the boys team finished in fourth place and the girls team finished in sixth.

Brandon Valley took home the title in the boys meet on Tuesday, finishing with a team score of 37 points. Aberdeen Central finished in second place with 57 points while Harrisburg (63 points), Brookings (120) and Huron (128) rounded out the top five.

Jacob York led the way for the Bobcats in the boys 5,000-meter race, finishing in 13th place with a time of 17:32:56. Jonathan Kahler finished right behind him as his time of 17:33.31 was good for 14th place. Luke DeRynck (18:17.79) finished in 28th place for the Bobcats while Igen Nywanda (18:19.37) finished in 30th and Nathan Smith (18:59.81) finished in 45th place.

Harrisburg’s Cashton Johnson had the fastest individual time in Thursday’s boys race, finishing the course in 16:02.61. 

Brandon Valley also took home the team title in the girls meet with a team total of 30 points. Harrisburg finished in second place with 50 points while Mankato West (101 points), Watertown (104 points) and Aberdeen Central (116 points) rounded out the top five.

Addie Smetana was the top finisher for Brookings with a time of 21:01.70 that was good for 23rd place. Madison Kepner was next for the Bobcats, finishing in 25th place with a time of 21:09.73 while Lily Murray (21:26.48) finished 28th, Josie Nold (21:55.58) finished 40th and Jenna York (22:30.04) finished 47th.

Brandon Valley’s Addison Scholten had the fastest time in the girls race finishing the course in a time of 18:28.94. 

The boys and girls cross country teams will be in action again on Sept. 29 when they take part in the Watertown Invite at the Cattail Crossing Golf Course.
