Bobcats, Fliers run at Huron Clyde Cotton invite

HURON – Aberdeen Central won the boys race and Brandon Valley won the girls race at the Clyde Cotton Cross Country Invitational held Saturday at Broadland Creek Country Club in Huron.

Boys

Aberdeen Central scored 77 points to win the invite by six points over Sioux Falls Christian at 83 points, and Brandon Valley at 109 points.

Brookings scored 128 points to finish in fifth place.

Flandreau posted a score of 318 points to finish in 13th.

Individually, Sioux Falls Christian’s Isaac Davelaar won the race in 16:17.87, just under three seconds ahead of Spearfish’s Keenan Urdiales who finished in 16:20.53.

Milbank’s Nick Batchelor ran in 16:24.85 to take third.

The Bobcats’ Sam Conrad posted a time of 17:06.66 to take fifth place, Torry Harding placed 13th with a time of 17:25.90, and a trio of Bobcats – Ernest Ting (18:20.43), Igen Nyawanda (18.21.90), Jacob York (18:23.55) finished in 40th-42nd place.

For Flandreau, Matthew Gassman was the top finisher for the Fliers, running in 19:01.36 for 63rd place.

Liam Streitz finished in 65th place with a time of 19:10.84, and Lurick Dailey crossed under a second later in 19:11.33 for 66th place.

In the JV race, Jonathan Kahler’s time of 18:44.85 was good enough for fifth place, while Jack Schultz ran in 20:11.49 for 37th place. Nathan Smith finished in 20:15.16 for 39th place.

A quartet of Bobcats finished 8th-11th place in the middle school race.

Luke DeRynck (9:40.87), Trevin Lounsbery (9:41.24), Zachary Mueller (9:41.31), and Dylan Haar (9:45.60) posted the top times for Brookings.

Girls

Brandon Valley’s score of 72 points claimed top honors as the Lynx outran Sioux Falls Lincoln for the team title.

Lincoln scored 79 points for second place, while O’Gorman finished with 83 points for third place.

Both Brookings and Flandreau did not qualify for team scoring.

O’Gorman’s Alea Hardie crossed the finish line first overall in a time of 17:59.09, five seconds ahead of Lincoln’s Ali Bainbridge who clocked in at 18:04.42.

Brandon Valley’s Mia Wentzy took third, nearly a full minute behind the leading pair, running in 18:56.70.

Addie Smetana placed 45th as the top finisher for Brookings, running in 22:11.57.

Teammates Lily Murray (22:32.77, 54th place) and Madison Kepner (23:09.52, 61st place) were the other Bobcats to run the varsity race.

Flandreau’s Faith Wiese finished in 20:56.82 for 23rd place, and Lily Klein finished 46th in a time of 22:12.31.

Hailey Lahr ran in 23:14.88 and 63rd place.

Brookings’ Sophia Schmit finished the girls JV race in 22:12.48 for third place.

Gabby Bryant clocked a time of 24:30.25 to finish 31st; Jenna Sprang (33rd, 24:52.98) and Kennedy Nemitz (34th, 24:53.86) rounded out top finishers for the Bobcats.

Brookings’ Maisie Mogard finished 24th overall in the girls middle school race, running in 11:07.99.

Isabel Overby took 43rd place in a time of 11:49.88, while Maya Hansen (12:49.52) and Kristen Bjornestad (12:50.31) took 49th and 50th place, respectively.

Brookings hosts its lone meet of the year, the Russ Strande Invitational, this Thursday during Homecoming week for the Bobcats. Races begin at 4 p.m. at Edgebrook Golf Course.

Flandreau takes part in the Deuel Invitational today at the Clear Lake Golf Course.
