Bobcat girls come in sixth at Watoma Invite

WATERTOWN – The Brookings girls cross country team finished sixth and the boys cross country team had four runners place at the Watoma Invite Cross Country Meet on Thursday afternoon at the Cattail Crossing Golf Course in Watertown.

The girls finished in sixth place with a team score of 154 points. The Bobcats were paced by Addie Smetana, who finished in 20th place with a time of 21:16.75. Madison Kepner was the next Brookings runner to cross the finish line, coming in at 24th place with a time of 21:29.67.

Other Brookings runners included Lily Murray, who finished in 33rd place with a time of 22:01.64, Josie Nold, who finished in 43rd place with a time of 22:32.90, Jenna York, who finished in 45th place with a time of 22:39.10, Sophia Schmidt, who finished in 64th place with a time of 23:55.01 and Gabby Bryant, who finished in 72nd place with a time of 27:01.96.

O’Gorman’s Libby Castelli won the race with a time of 17:59.07 while her teammate, Ruth Pardy finished in second with a time of 18:37.69. Brandon Valley’s Addison Scholten rounded out the top three with a time of 18:46.28.

Brandon Valley took home the team title on the girls side, finishing with a score of 34 points, followed by Harrisburg at 60 points, O’Gorman at 73 points, Aberdeen Central at 113 points and Watertown at 114 points.

Jacob York led Brookings on the boys side, finishing in 19th place with a time of 17:51.57. Jonathan Kahler was next to finish for the Bobcats, placing 28th with a time of 18:01.67. Igen Nyawanda finished in 34th with a time of 18:19.44 and Nathan Smith finished in 75th place with a time of 19:40.20.

Harrisburg’s Cashton Johnson won the race with a time of 16:06.54 followed by Pierre T.F. Riggs’s Jaret Lutmer (16:26.86) and O’Gorman’s Jack Castelli (17:02.87).

Brandon Valley took home the team title with 74 points while Sioux Falls Roosevelt finished in second with 94 points. Pierre T.F. Riggs finished in third with 101 points, Sioux Falls Jefferson finished fourth with 102 points and Aberdeen Central finished in fifth with 111 points.

The Bobcats will be back in action when they take part in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Cross Country Meet at Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. on Oct. 8.

This is the second meet that Brookings will run in at Edgebrook. The Bobcats hosted the Russ Strande Invite on Sept. 22.
