BROOKINGS – Brookings bikers celebrated the city’s new Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community status by taking part in the Mayor’s Ride & Walk around town Thursday evening. The group started in front of the Children’s Museum of South Dakota and took off on either a 10-mile or a 2-mile route, both ending at Downtown at Sundown on Fifth Street.
Mayor Keith Corbett addressed the crowd before it hit the streets and trails around Brookings. Corbett said he was excited for his first Mayor’s Ride.
“I think it’s important that we promote safe biking in Brookings, but also that biking isn’t just to get from point A to point B. It’s a lifestyle in Brookings, and that’s what we want to ensure.”
The mayor added that the Bronze designation speaks highly for Brookings and its dedication to making bike-friendly improvements and promoting the activity through its Bicycle Master Plan.
“The bike committee’s hard work, the staff’s hard work, the council’s commitment to supporting it: That’s Brookings,” he said.
