BROOKINGS – A Lake Preston man was arrested after a high-speed chase Friday, according to Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring of the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Arrested was Casey Lee Verhey, 32, of Lake Preston. He was taken into custody on suspicion of second-offense DUI, eluding law enforcement, reckless driving, speeding, lane violations, and two stop sign violations, Sebring said.

The incident started at 3:39 a.m. Friday when a deputy from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a 2011 Chevy Silverado that was traveling 61 mph in a 35 mph zone on Highway 14 at Hasina Avenue in Volga.

“While trying to stop the suspect vehicle, it fled, traveling north on 464th Avenue. The suspect continued north with speeds reaching in excess of 100 mph. The suspect ran stop signs at 204th Street and 201st Street,” Sebring said.

“The pursuit ended when the suspect went into the ditch at the intersection of 196th street and 464th Avenue,” he said.

Also involved in the pursuit were the University Police Department, Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office and Brookings Police Department.
