VOLGA – A man tried to convince a boy to accept a ride with him, but the boy ran away and authorities are searching for the man, according to Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring of the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The parents of the 12-year-old boy reported at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday that their son was approached by a man in an older black van with dark tinted windows and sliding back doors as the boy was walking to a friend’s house around 6 p.m. on Hansina Avenue and Fourth Street near Sioux Valley School in Volga.

“The driver of the van only rolled the passenger side window down a couple of inches and told the 12-year-old that his dad had called him and asked him to pick him up from school today. The 12-year-old did not recognize the driver or van and ran away,” Sebring said.

The boy looked back and saw the van stayed stopped in that location, then drove north on Hansina Avenue.

“The 12-year-old advised that he did not get a good look at the driver and only advised that he had a deeper voice,” Sebring said.

The boy said the van might be a Dodge Caravan with some dents in the front on the hood, and the front passenger side wheel was rusty.
